2nd day of firearm season took this 8 pointer from the top of a huge brush pile that was surrounded by scrapes. The big ol dude came out of the woods 5 minutes after 7am, lured by tinks 69 scent. I did not know if I would be able to turn 160 degrees raise my Rem 700 6mm without him seeing me. As slow as I could I managed to turn and place the cross hairs on his head. I kept waiting for him to turn sideways. The johnson grass was to high. As I watched through the scope he slobbered and rutted brush as he walked straight at me. I looked over the scope to see how close he really was, "OH MY GOD" he was just about 20 yards from me. I did not want him to scent me. I gotta shoot him in the head,
So I pulled the trigger. He went down as fast as my finger touched the trigger. This was my first deer. My heart still beats fast thinking about it.

This was taken in S.E. Kansas.

A farmer that leases to farm my dads property stoped and talked to me two days before harvesting this buck. He was concerned that he might scare off the deer while I was bow hunting. No bother I told him.
Nice guy. Now take in mined he is about 65-70 yrs old, farming his whole life. He called later that evening after driving his machinery by the house. He explained that as he came down the road passing the pond he saw the biggest buck ever. His words were not week when he said the "biggest buck ever".
Needless to say this aint the buck he saw.

Imagine the thrill if they all come within 20 yards

Postby KS arrow flinger » Tue Oct 14, 2008 3:16 pm

Firstlight,

You just explained the thrill that a bowhunter gets on every hunt they see wild game on. All of our quarry have to come in to 20-30 yards, and yes the heart gets pounding every time.

I've taken a few with a bow, so I just watch most of the time. I'm holding out for more horns so I watch more than I pick up my bow for, but they are all a thrill. Deer, bobcats, turkey, pheasants, coons, skunks.

It is always a thrill that gets the heart rate rate and you forget how cold you are. Even when a squirrel or a bird gets within a few feet of you, it is special.

If you love to rifle hunt, try a bow for a 2-1/2 months of hunting season pleasure. Your wife may not appreciate it, but she'll learn to understand. She'll have to.
