Planning for fall of 09

Postby kjtencza » Wed Dec 31, 2008 2:49 pm

Hi friends.. So last year was my first elk hunt. I had planned pretty well, so I had thought. I had entered the colorado raffle on time, drew a either sex tag for unit 6 and had scouted the area out fairly well throughout the year. On the scouts, I found SOME sign but not much... it was a bummer. I tried to keep spirits high and when first season came around I backpacked in 10 miles and hunted for five days. I did not see one elk on my "hike."

As I sit her thinking about all those elk out in the mountains, I want to gain any advice which you might have as far as what dates are best for some good units in Colorado. I learned a lot on this last hunt, and would love to be set up to win in a unit which holds a pretty good elk population. I am not looking for a big bull... just some meat for my family. Any advice which you might have would be totally appreciated. Thanks guys!

OK, so while I can't give you specific CO info (I'm heading there for the 1st time in '10), I have to say your "hike" combined with not seeing an Elk is oretty darn typical, elk ain't whitetail.. Not poking fun, but hunt elk long enough and you'lll wonder how the darn things can hide. We've all hunted long and hard and put tons of miles on only to never see hair... Keep hiking, I'll be lookng to see what others say about CO areas as I'm looking forward to adding CO to places I've chased elk...

I HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE OF UNIT 6 BUT I HUNT 1ST RIFLE IN OCT
AND ALTHOUGH THERE ARE OICTURE PERFECT MEADOWS AT
9OOO FEET WHERE ALL THE ELK ARE SHOT ON TV THERE ARE NO ELK THERE I FIND THEM ABOVE 10800 BUT IF YOU UNIT DOESNT HAVE THAT KIND OF ELEVATION THERE STILL THERE SOMEWHERE
ALSO ON THE COLORADO DIVISION OF WILDLIFE YOU CAN FIND SUCSESS RATES FOR YOUR UNIT AND POPULATION DENSITY
THATS A GOOD PLACE TO RESURCE IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY
