Planting attractants and food

Got questions about what to grow and when to grow it? This is the place to ask.

Planting attractants and food

Postby BooBoo » Wed Jan 25, 2006 12:48 pm

I have an 8 acre piece of land in southern AZ. It is at about 4500 foot elevation and has a big wash running thru it. The wash is full of cats claw and mesquite trees. It has several areas that have a desert grass growing under threes that shows lots of deer sign. I have set out a few salt licks in these areas. I would like to plant some clover, alphalpa, beens, or something like that to attract and feed the deer. I have seen some commersial products designed specifically for this. The solil has a PH of about 7 and is rich in pot-ash but will require feralizer. Can anyone help me understand what to buy and how to plant it?

It seems you have already done some research on this subject. I can only give an opinion as to what to do. To save money, you can go to the local seed store and buy your seed there. They tend to have some of the same seeds at a lower price and you get more for the money. I would also contact your local DNR, as they can provide a lot of info. on what you are planning on doing.

Here is an article on drought proof food plots they might help..... http://www.qdma.com/articles/details.asp?id=28
Curiosity killed the cat, but I was a suspect for a while......

Corn is a great idea, It gows good here.

Thanks for the welcome, I hope I can help out here as well as gain some knowledge.

It looks like with my new land, I have a new deer heard. I hope to make them healthy and prosperous, so I can enjoy seeing them and enjoy feeding my family with them.

I have seen lots of sign on my land but not a actual deer sighting yet. I need to get a camera. I will start that discussion in another thread. Hopefully I can share the changes in my heard over the years so we all can learn.
