Plotts hounds or Blue Ticks?

Postby chris lavoie » Fri Sep 17, 2010 10:46 pm

I have hunted with plott hounds and blue ticks. I find the plott to be the best hound. They for one are small enough to jump out of the way of the scraping bayed bear. Whats your favorite and why??

The plotts I've seen are pretty big dogs. Some dogs are faster/smarter than others no matter what the breed. I like Walkers myself, but I've seen some good red ticks too, allways wanted a black and tan, pretty rare around here.

We always selected smaller size plotts for various reasons. Our neighboring outfitter ran hounds in Sept. Most of the bears he ran left his bear management area. If this happens and his clients are non-resident hunters, they have to put their weapons away and retreive the hounds immediately. His B.M.A. is only about 100 square miles. After the first chase the paws of his plotts were in bad shape because of all the blowdowns. The small broken limbs were poking the pads as the hounds climbed over the downed trees.

We've had some pretty good runs here, one of the guys I hunt with, his group killed 4 nice bears the first week. I haven't been much lately because of work. My cousin lost a good dog in a bever flowage, dog was crossing and his collar got hung up un a branch and he couldn't move, drowned him a few feet from the bank. I've been taking a kid and we still have to get him a bear, but we have until the end of october.
