when is a good time to start some food plots like alfalfa and/or clover? what would you prefer to use if you were making a small 1/2 acre plot?

If you are getting your seeds at a supply/feed store, you can ask them. If you are buying a seed that is specifically marketed for deer, check the back of the bag or check their website. It should tell you when to plant based on zone.

We planted clover, and some "chic magnet" in March. Not too impressed with the clover (we limed, fertilized, etc..) yet, but maybe it'll come around. Both fields are riddled with weeds and have been sprayed with Arrest herbicide twice. I guess this is what happens when you try to turn poorly maintained fields into quality food plots. Still not giving up hope yet. Good luck with whatever you choose. This is the first year we have planted anything other than corn, or soybeans. (and wheat in winter)

--Also if you havnt checked them out yet, North American Whitetail Institute is extremely informative, and has some of the best customer service you could hope for. From the soil samples, to weed control, and anything in between they were very helpful. (Even if it seems we're not having the best luck). I'd recommend their services to anyone.
