Pump Action vs Semiautomatic

Postby brachmana » Wed Apr 13, 2011 10:11 pm

I am looking for an all-around shotgun (from whitetail to small game), but can’t decide between a pump action or a semiautomatic. What do you guys think?

Pump. Inherently a little more accurate. Easier to keep clean/clean. We hunt with Winchester 1300's and Mossberg 500's. Remington 870's are good too. NEF/H&R makes a line of combo shotguns too. Remington and Mossberg both have combo deals with a slug gun/barrel and a "bird barrel". Good luck no matter what you decide. Depending on your targets besides deer the gauge may be more important then the action. We prefer 12 ga for most deer hunting but a 16 or 20 for all others cept waterfowl and turkeys.

Just to be the devils advocate here  there are some inherent advantages to semi auto also. With the versatility now to use a shotgun that can handle everything from 2 3/4 to 3 1/2 inch magnum loads,,,the semi normally absorbs some of the viscious recoil of the 3 1/2. I myself have purchased a new Rem 11-87 Super,,,LOVE IT. cant wait to shoot it a bit more and get it broken in a bit. I will add that even firing the super mags,,,recoil was much more tolerable. Also for me the Semi,,is easier to get a follow up shot if necessary.

Pumps are easier on the bank account. Depends alot on what a guy wants to spend.

I have had an Ithaca Featherweight since I was a kid - it is just a little heavier than my 30-30 and is easy to tote around all day. I absolutely love this gun! It is a pump action with a barrel that may be interchanged or removed in a minute. Now this gun in called "Featherlight" and there is an optional rifled barrel. Check out the Browning BPS, I've had one of mine for over 30 years without an issue. I like a pump and as far as a follow up shot, you can get it out plenty fast enough with a pump, plus they are much more reliable and less finicky about what you put through them. As far as recoil, I'll give that advantage to the semi, but if you can't take the recoil, maybe you should go with a 20ga.

I have a mOssberg 500 and I love it in thee past three years I have had it I have killed 10 deer with it and they all fell over as for a follow up shot its the first one that counts when you learn how to use it you can pump pretty fast the other dayi shot a 8 point my bro told me it sounded like i had a machine gun as for Remington or mosberg go look at them in the shop they both have diffnces and I would go with a 12 ga we are starting to goose hunt this year and 12 just has more kick and more pellets
