Question About Venison?

Postby ssullivan » Thu Jan 05, 2006 9:20 am

Guys,

I have a question about venison. I know this is the best meat out there, and have been eating it regularly (store bought, unfortunately) for a few months. It's hard to go back to beef after such a good meat - and with my cholesterol problems, it's much more healthy.

My question is this:

When my wife and I eat venison for dinner, we often notice we can't sleep and are charged with energy. My mind literally races when I'm trying to sleep. Anyone know anything about this? Why does it happen?

Thanks in advance.

PS: Anyone know of any groups in New England where you can split up a deer? I live on a sailboat and have a very small freezer. I'd be interested in splitting up one with someone.

Thanks again.

never had that happen to me....
Im sure someone close to you would split one up if not just go to your local butcher shop and see what he might have available.
Come out I have you all surrounded.

I have never had that problem. I just feel bloated and miserable(I tend to eat to much venison). Maybe it is the deers spirit coming into you. If your neck starts swelling and you start rubbing up the furniture, call us.

Thanks for the replies. So nobody's heard of it. I guss it must just be these deer we eat. We were trying to figure this out and it's been a mystery. The venison we get comes frozen from New Zealand. We are wondering if it's something they eat grazing down there.... something a little funky. We do notice it goes off the shelves pretty quick in the stores here.... ha ha ha.

I've seen mail order game meat from farms in the west, but never on shelves in a store.

its the adrenaline from the meat, from what i hear, it makes you have energy, and then all the energy is stored, and isant being used when your laying down

New market strategy "Venison the * Alternative" "have trouble falling a sleep at the wrong time try "No-DOES". :D :D . I have never heard of that or seen wild game processed in such a guanity to be marketed in stores.

Hi folks,
In England you can buy venison at the butcher. It's not the same as whitetail, though the taste is similar. My guess is that New Zealand venison is different as well.
On the other hand I've been eating venison for a long time, so maybe it does keep me awake at night and I've just gotten used to it and don't remember.

Must be buck meat from during the rut..Listen to mother nature and do your own rutting when you can't sleep.

From the research I found on the internet venison was no lower in colesterol than equally lean beef. Red meat is red meat. One of the biggest differences I love is that unlike comercial beef there are no groth hormones or steroids..Pure cornfed lean organic awesome tasting natural food. We had three in the freezer last fall and it was gone by the end of june. It was a long wait for october 1st for us.

Deer eating strange things

Postby Billhoo » Wed Oct 25, 2006 3:53 am

I remember when I was stationed in Hawaii with the army, we used to see wild chickens in the mountains. They were real easy to catch.

My section sergeant told us not to even consider eating them because they eat pocalolo seeds (marijuana) and will likely show up in our urinalysis tests.

Maybe the venison you are eating has eaten psychodelic mushrooms, someone's illegal marijuana farm or drinking runoff from a secret crystal meth lab hidden in the woods?

You may have a point with the shrooms. The "psychodelic" mushrooms that people use to trip on are only found in fields with grain fed cows. Now, since this person is buying deer meat packaged in a store, it is very possible that these could be grain fed, pen kept deer. I will have to elaborate with my "botonist" buddy on that one. :D

As far as the other two scenerio's, it is highly unlikely, no pun intended.

OK, I know this is a very old thread, but I have the exact same problem!!! Very weird. I've Googled it and can't find anything about it. Sometimes when I eat venison I get insomnia. It's like caffein. My mind races and I get unusual feeling. It doesn't happen all the time but it's a very strange feeling like i drank a up of coffee before bed or something. It took me a while to figure it out, but I'm positive now I get after eating venison for diner. It doesn't happen all the time though, so I'm wondering if maybe it is just from one specific deer I caught. Since I have the meat all mixed up from three different deer last summer???

Is it something the deer were eating?? A weird type of allergy I have to it?? The way my body breaks down a protein it isn't used to??

Any ideas anyone?

Venison is high in vitamins includeing vitamin B which gives you energy. That could be what is keeping you up.

I just noticed you had acknowledged the date so I deleted my first post. Didnt want you to maybe be offended by no reply. I tend to want to sleep after a venison meal but we usually pile on alot of extras, fried taters n gravy, biscuits etc. Maybe rhubarb pie or goosberry, blackberry cobbler or mincemeat.

You guys might be on to something, maybe I should trade my slimfast and oatmeal for deer steak and eggbeaters for breakfast to get me going.
