Saturday AM - No deer

Saturday Mid day - planeted 3 - 1/4 to 1/2 acre plots and moved three stands to better positions. By the time I got done, thunderstorms rolled in and runined the afternoon hunt but at least my new plots got watered.

Sunday PM - Got to the club at 3:00, set up a ground blind for the Ninja to hunt in a few weeks when rifle season rolls in, moved one stand that I had already moved Saturday because I didn't like the way it was facing. Got back to the truck to do a quick wash down and go hunting and I checked the weather on my Blackberry and just as the page was loading I heard a clap of thunder. I got loaded up just in time to keep from getting wet.

Good news - I got my plots in and they're getting water. My stands are all set expcept for one. I still need a stand for a northwest wind. Bad news I only spent two hours in the deer stand.

Thanks Confuscious. :D

My only dissapointment really is that I felt like I should have had those stands moved and ready a month ago.

If it wasn't for big rain drops and lightning I wouldn' have seen anything at all today. We desperately needed the rain but man why did it have to come during deer season?

Hate it for you AB. I am 23 days into my bowseason and I have seen roughly 6 deer, none that were old enough to shoot. I couldn't hunt Saturday morning due to family obligations, hunted saturday afternoon, nada, Sunday morning, zilch, Sunday evening rain again. I was supposed to go this afternoon but it looks like it is going to dump buckets on me. Don't get me wrong, I love to hunt in the rain but this is a little ridiculous.

Your season sounds like my season last year. All the deer i saw during bow season were two small to shoot. I probably saw around 10 deer total during bow season, and only 4 presented me with a good broadside shot. I didn't shoot any though. They were to small and i wasn't worried about meat because I knew i could fill the freezer in gun season.

I was out all day yesterday.
Winds blowing N by NW at about 10-15..45-50 degrees
Saw 2 does in the opposite field right at sunup (of course....)
Saw 2 coyotes and and a skunk...
I was really windy for the most part.
But no luck this weekend...

We have a cold front coming through here in southern Ohio. It's supposed to be in the mid 30's and cloudy on Saturday and Sunday morning. The high for both days is 62, but I think it will be cool enough in the afternoon to let the deer hang overnight since the temperature is supposed to get down in the mid 40s after sundown and in the high 30s overnight. Too bad it wasn't a week or two later, then I could grunt and rattle too. I just want to see some decent deer.

I kinda know how you feel Douglas. Last week we had low temperatures in to lower 40s, and highs in the 60s. But all this week its been warming up. It's not looking good temperature wise in Alabama for opening weekend. High's in the 70s with lows in the 60s, and rain all week with thunderstorms on Saturday. The weather wont be in my favor, Showers on Wednesday, t-storms on Tuesday, few showers on Friday, showers on Saturday, and showers on Sunday. With Friday having the least chance of rain and Sunday having a low of 49 I'm betting these will be my best days; however, I'm going to try and hunt everyday till Sunday.

:( Saw absolutely nothing again this morning. This is by far the slowest season we've had in the past 3 years so far. We just need a week or two of some good cold days to get the deer moving. Right now they are probably bedding down in the fields and fattening up for the rut.

Dang it!!

Postby StickThrower » Sat Oct 10, 2009 9:37 pm

If it were an elephant I still would have missed......!! For the passed week I have been in a ladder stand that I set up over a small plot and have been getting very depressed because I havent seen much except for the first day out. So today I decided I would use my climber (which I havent used in a long while and now I remember why I need a new one) and I wasnt settled in for longer than 15 minutes and wore out from wrestling the stupid climber and out came a beautiful 6 point. He was definitley headed where he wanted to go without question because he never put his head up or stopped to look around so I stood up as he passed behind a tree and anticipated where I was gonna take the shot and made a small grunt just before the spot and he stopped perfectly and off went the arrow and just my luck I guess he got his first stomach hair cut. Damn!! First shot off of the season and a miss. Oh well. At least I know where I will be Monday morning. How is everyone else doing.
May the hunting gods bring you luck.

This is the worst week of work every year. The clock stops and i just cant focus. All i can think about is my tree stand location and how confident i am that opening day is going to be a good one. 40 percent chance of showers to me means its not going to rain and its saposed to be nice and cold. saterday cant come soon enough.

Don't worry guys, I don't think you are missing much. The moon and the temperature just isn't right yet and to be honest, the deer really aren't moving, at least not around me they aren't. The coming weeks should be good.

Drink hot tea with a spoonful of honey and a lemon cough drop in it every 3-4 hours. Gargle with warm salt water before bed and 2-3 times throughout the day. Also good to take a MucinexD or MucinexDM depending on whether you have nose/throat congestion and plugged ears or just coughing.

It's supposed to rain again this saturday morning and as of right now, again next saturday too. I don't know what it is but we've had rain scheduled on every weekend here in Ohio since bow season opened, annoying. I should be hunting during the week but I can't take off work.

That's good to hear. I'm unsure of the weather here in Ohio since there's a chance of rain up until about 6:00AM on Saturday. Hopefully it stops a little earlier than that and the deer start moving since it will be in the mid 30s. Good luck everyone!

Anyone see anything Saturday? I've only seen a spike all season so far. Going out Sunday morning but I'm beginning to believe in Santa more than whitetail deer. I usually always see deer in the beginning of season and with all the deer on my field camera I'm getting a little confused as to why I am not seeing anything.

Archery opened this past Monday in Massachusetts. I've spent 27 hours in the stand so far. 3 different y bucks, a spike and first year 6 that will be nice in a couple of years. Looking to take a doe first but haven't seen one! Isn't that always the way.

Also, found a skull and antlers of a nice 6. My guess about 107.5 P&Y.

Bad news: Saturday morning was the opening day of rifle season. That makes the deer skittish and hard to bowhunt so it will only get harder for me from here on out.

Good News: I was going hunting wether it was raining or not.

Bad News: It was raining hard.

Good News : I had frog togs.

Good News: Hunted ALLLLL day!

Bad News: Ziplock had a leak, soggy lunch.

Good News: The rain let up a little.

Good News: 8 point at 48 yards

Bad News: Rainy blood trail.

Good News: Heart shot, only ran 65 yards.

Bad News: Camera was dead due to rain.

Good News: BACKSTRAPS!

NICE! I didn't see this post until just now. For some reason, this thread wasn't flashing orange like it had been updated. Good job QW. Backstraps back, ALRIGHT!

Glad someone is seeing deer around here. I'm still not seeing anything but I will be going out saturday morning. Family is coming in town so I will only be hunting tomorrow morning this weekend.

I've hunted just about every day since October 3rd and have seen nothing big enough to shoot. 1 big spike, and a small 4 pointer is all. I may shoot that spike if I see him again being that regular bow ends this coming Friday. Then Permit bow starts, along with the Rut! Then maybe the big boys will start showing up.

Beautiful Saturday morning…..frosty and cool. Saw 2 does working their way through the corn. The winds were perfect.
Saturday night….perfect winds….saw a yearling doe at 20 yards. I watched her for an hour or so milling around. Right before dark a fat old doe winded me on the only section of field that that was down wind of me. Snorting, blowing at me. Too bad it’s not rifle season
Sunday…raining…so quite in the woods I swear I heard a chipmunk fart. Saw one mature doe out of range.
It was a nice weekend

Sounds nice. It was kind of windy for us this past weekend. Still seeing squat. Only the 1 spike so far this year, out of 10+ hunts. Has me in the dumps.

Well, this morning was one of my best hunts ever. I saw a doe walking towards me not long after first light. She bedded down about 30 yards away and out of the corner of my eye, I see the small 11 pointer that we have on camera. Finally! Seeing some deer. I decided that I was going to shoot him if a shot opened up. He rubbed against a tree and licked a branch then walked towards to doe and jumped her. She ran the wrong way and he ended up walking away up the hill after her. No shot even for being at 30 yards thanks to a tree being in the way. Not too long after I heard some crashing which made me to believe that another hunter shot him and he was crashing, but I was wrong. About 120-150 yards away, I saw 3 does being chased by a huge bodied deer. Not sure how big his rack was but he was big. Not too long after that, I saw that spike for the third time this season who came from where all the chasing was...and he was acting like a nutcase, he was all ate up. He was running around with his tongue out and had big buggy eyes. He was running up and down the surrounding hills and running circles around my stand. I started to feel sorry for the little guy. I'm not sure if he's so horned up and looking for a doe or if he was mistaken as a doe himself and got mounted by a big buck. Either way, I didn't get any shots off but it was a great hunt. The rut is starting and deer are moving now. That is enough to make me happy and makes it worth being in the stand now.
