Rambling Bow Season

Postby KwackWacker » Tue Aug 11, 2009 7:50 am

Georgia's bow season starts in 1 month, 14 hours, 9 minutes and 17 seconds from the time i wrote this. I have been shooting every day for at least 30 minutes, either in my back yard or at the range at my local pro shop. I know it happens every year but it just seems like I'm more excited this year than I have been in years past. I have a new hunting club that we have been prepping for the past 8 months or so. I have a sweet little hardwood bottom picked out that is just loaded with white oak trees. My wife decided she wanted to try bowhunting this year so I changed her setup from a target bow to a hunting bow. Last weekend i hung two lock on style stands on a trail close to that bottom. I set out a couple of trails cams and I am anxiously awaiting the results.

So what do y'all think? Is it just me or are you excited too? Feel free to ramble all you want on this thread. It's dedicated to the mystical flight of the arrow and those who launch them.

I haven't done any shooting yet. Just drawing back and holding to get my muscles going. I should have started shooting a long time ago, though. I normally start shooting mid summer but this year I've been lazy I guess. I only have 2 arrows and afraid that if I break them during practice that I won't have some in time for season so I need to get some more. So danged expensive. September 26th is opening day here in Ohio.

I am ready for the most part and pumped as all get out. Il be putting in a ground blind this weekend. My stands are already in. I still need to get my hunting cloths and boots refreshed. I have been shooting for about a half hour every other night and when the kids let me. I really have not changed a thing from last year as far a gear goes so its business as usual there. Im planning on going out around 1:00pm on opening day and wont hunt on Sunday. The season is just beginning and I want to save some areas for the rut. Since I am addicted to deer I have a tendency to over hunt a particular stand. Hopefully this season I will be able to gain some control back

I am ready. Been shooting alot of bows, just not mine. Thats the perks of working at an outdoor store. I get to start hunting Sept 19-21, a week early. The state wide season opens Sept 26.

Went to check my trail cams yesterday, one was missing, stolen I guess, one was out of batteries and I forgot to put the SD card in my other one which meant that it put all of the pics on the internal card, which holds about 15 picutres. I hope this is not an omen for the season to come.

Dont get me wrong im ready to hit the woods but for some reason im just not as stoked this year.I think it has something to do with what we discussed on another thread.I like to get out and do some scouting and hang standing and feel like i earned my deer.I have been hunting the same lease now for 7 years and all that stuff is done.It might change a little but not much. Its starting to just feel like target practice.Im thinking about bowing out next year and start hunting public land.Or maybe i should just gun hunt the lease.Im sure that once im in the woods ill get that rush again.

Just the oposite here in Kansas, normally July and August are nothing but mid to upper 90's and 100's but we've had a very cool and wet summer, it rained yesterday (again) and its 80's again today for a high. We are ahead on rainfall for the normal in summer here by 4-5 inches.

We had a couple 100 degree days in June (which happens every few years) but July and August have been very nice.

Pretty normal year for us down here hot as hell since May. We have been getting some good rain lately so that helps with this drought we're in.

You mentioned your drought there, south Texas is getting hammered.

Its been even on the local news here in Kansas that all their grass has dried and sun burned up and lots of ponds are dried up down there, not a drop of rain down there for a long time.

Some farmers are having to feed their cattle hay and others that can't afford hay are selling their cattle so they won't starve.

I looked this up. - http://drought.unl.edu/DM/MONITOR.html

Woo hoo! I finally got a hold of the guy whose land I've been hunting on for the past 3 years. I was starting to worry because I've called and left messages and haven't heard from him but I finally got a hold of him this afternoon. So it looks like my buddy and I have a place to hunt (starting on Sept. 26) and my wife now has to get up early to take care of the dog while I hunt (something I typically do on the weekend)...she's just so thrilled. :D

Thank you K Dub. I really need to start practice shooting, though. I really lack confidence in my shooting since I replaced my broken pin sight and still need more arrows. These next 4 weeks I will be busy getting prepared. :?

17 Days, 7 Hours, 43 minutes, 30 seconds until opening day.

If you could see me now you would see a ragged man sitting at his desk with bloodshot eyes and messed up hair just waiting on the edge of his seat. I just got my Kansas mount back a month ago and it is staring at me. I can't keep deer hunting off of my brain.

9 Days, 14 Hours, 14 Minutes, 20 Seconds and counting, slowly, slowly counting.

Finished refletching my hunting arrows yesterday and put wraps on them. I screwed in my practice broadheads. I numbered them and shot them to see which one shot the best consistently. That arrow earned the number one spot in my quiver. The rest fell in place according to how well I shot them. I put a final edge on the Montecs, screwed them on my arrows, did a quick spin test and filled the quiver. I waxed my bowstring, checked every screw, checked all the ties on my silencers and peep, checked the limb pockets, cleaned my sights and cleaned the crud out of my release. I believe I am almost ready to go. Still shooting 30 minutes every day. Shot today for the first time with my quiver on. Everything is nice and quiet. Tomorrow I will rewash all of my hunting clothes with scent free wash and hang them out on the porch until hunting season. All I need now is for the season to start.

Almost there Douglas. :D I keep sliding out of my office chair because the edge is worn out from me sitting on it. It really doesn't help that I have the Outdoor Channel playing on a TV here. Just makes me want it that much more.

Soooooooo close, oh so close. My wife is about to kick me out of the house. I can hear my bow talking to me and that thing is singing some sweet twangy string music. Just counting the seconds now.

23 Hours, 50 Minutes, 15 Seconds

Less than a day. It's like Christmas Eve except sort of better because this lasts for months. It's Deer Hunting Season Eve. In honor of deer season eve I have written a poem. Enjoy.

Twas the night before deer season and all through the woods,
All the creatures were stirring and eating some goods.
I've got my treestand hung in a white oak with care,
In the hopes that a buck will soon there.

The hunters are nestled all snug in their beds.
While visons of backstraps danced through their heads.
Their bows loaded down with arrows all shiny,
The hunters were ready to tag some deer hiney.

That's right fellas. I've got mad poet skills.
Edgar Allen who?!?

I never drew my bow and had the time of my life. I watched a doe and two fawns hang around for a couple of hours each day. I also saw a total of 9 raccoons, two box turtles and I watched a rat snake eat a frog. Sat in the stand for a total of 9 hours. Good opener. It was so hot i wasn't expecting to see anything.

...and that's all that matters, the enjoyment of being in the stand watching the day come to life and watching the food chain ensue. Glad it was nice, hopefully it cools off and you get a chance of drawing back on a big boy.

Well the bow season start was a hot one 80 degrees in the shade and 60% humidity.
I didn’t see any deer…prolly because I was sweating so bad they could smell me 2 counties away.
I did get to watch a mink play for a while that was really cool to see, Heard and Owl hooting and those darn squirrels that sound like a monster deer coming through the forest.
The day overall was great, il prolly stay out of my areas till the temps start to dip. It felt good to be in the stand

Thats why I generaly don't bowhunt until at least mid to even late October, here in southern Kansas it can be 80's and even lower 90's some days for highs into early October.

Not a bad summer at all this year for temps but normally just too danged hot. LOL

NYBuckhunter you should head up to the norhtern zone early season bow with last years tag. opens on the 28th. The adirondacks are tough hunting but theres some world class bucks up there. Man went last year and had a giant come out about 50 yards from my blind. he was just there one second and then gone a few later but much to far for a shot.

Dang your so lucky. Alabama deer season(bow season) doesn't start for 29 more days. On October the 15. Like you I'm very excited about the upcoming bow season. We just got out of a hunting club this year, but we still got 6 food plots in Wedowee, plenty of woods there, 80 acres in Guntersville with about 4 food plots and plenty of woods, and some family land in Rockford that is close to 170 acres of deer hunting gold. I'll probably do most my hunting in Wedowee, but im looking forward to hunting all over. May even try the management areas. I can't wait for what will hopefully be a successful season. I know i can get some does, but a wall hanger would be nice.

thats the only reason i do it. my fathers been going up there for years to indian lake. i went last year and its tough hunting but the deer grow huge up there. we just kinda go out and see what we can find its hard to locate deer up there.

No hunt for me.... I planned on leaving early this morning, but over slept after busting hump yesterday at the big sale and fall event we had. I talked to a buddy this morning at 6:30am, that is down where I planned on hunting and he said that he was packing up and leaving. It was foggy and raining. I decided to just stay here. Good thing that my tag was free and I didnt have to pay $21 for it like some people did.
