Random Hunting Tips Wanted

I still hunt and hunt out of a stand but never seem to see deer but as i walk threw the woods, i see rub marks (fresh), Droppings, Prints and bedding areas. I go in woods at crack of dawn til about 11am and then back in around 2 until dark and dont see hardly anything, but the squirrels sure do make racket. What can someone tell me that will help lure them in?? Ive covered my scent, i have put apple scent on my shoes, used calls, etc...and didnt see them. Whats up with this??

Don't ever be afraid to move your stand when you don't see deer, for me thats a top rule.

You'll be likely to do better and see some deer if you find where the does are feeding and if possible also find out where they bed.

Then find a deer trail with signs of deer use (hoove prints/deer poop) that connects the two together and put up a stand overlooking that trail at or just inside were the trail enters the feed field. Deer out of habit will often stop at the edge of the feed field to look around before they step out into the clearing and that can present a time to shoot.

If you find a trail in the woods that intersects with other trails and they all show signs of use that can be a great place to put up a stand also.

If you have no clue of a bedding area and need to do some scouting then try to wear rubber boots if at all possible and try not to go tromping around in their bedding area to much that can alert them to human activity and they will go to another area.

Where whitetails bed can vary depending on the type of land and where it is you live, here they like to bed in deep thick CRP fields, tall thickets and in isolated pockets of woods where they can see around in all directions.

Bowhunters absoluty right with everything he says. Like he said don't be afraid to mve your stand I ave over 25 different trees to climb on 3 small pieces of property. The only thing sometimes deciding on which one to hunt. Plus the more time in the stand will increase your sightings.

Thanks for the tips guys.....hopefully next weekend will be better, im heading to bass pro shop now to get a field camera just to see whats back here.

I have seen many signs, alot of fresh rubs and few walking paths. Me and my hunting partner also notices where a family of deer have been bedding. What time do they normally start moving?? and coming back??

Another thing,,,,if you dont have apple trees in your immediate area,,,loose the apple scent. Get some rubber soled boots and your good to go. IF you still feel the need to use a cover scent,,,use a scent drag with a couple drops of scent on it. (MOST PEOPLE USE TOO MUCH SCENT)

Find the does and you will find the bucks. If you have field access its easy find the trails where they go in and out of the field. However a field is usually good when the crop is something that the deer feed on and the 1st hour of sunrise and the last hour of day light

If you've found a area where there are alot of beds in one small spot that's most likely where your does are bedding down at. Look around and see if you can find somewhere close by that the land rises and has lots of cover...that's where the big boy's going to be. I agree with the tip about losing the scent if it's not apples anywhere around, find something natural. Most likely your deer are doing this activity prior to you arriving to your stand, invest in a scent dripper and try to get them use to coming through legal shooting hours. If your hunting by a field, later in the year after being shot at a few times and being chased by dogs deer tend to smarting up a bit and only come out into the field when they feel it's safe enough for them, find a spot to intercept them before they reach the field, maybe then you'll be able to bag one. Good luck.

A few thoughts from my pea sized brain...

1) Make sure your clothes are scent free and you're using a wash that gets rid of the UV Brightners in fabric...I use this stuff call "sportwash".

2) Coverscent...I just use that Scent Killer spray that smells like dirt.

3) Don't drink coffee in your stand...the caffene will make you go and go and go...not to mention you will get colder from the constriction that the cafffene causes your capilliaries to do.

4) Now this is just me...I've seen the most deer this year between 10a - 4p this year...I'm thinking that it's from them getting 'pushed' by all the guys breaking for lunch.

5) Have a number of stand or blind sites that you hunt...and vary them up every now and then be mindful of the wind direction, but, if you've done some prep on Scent Control you should be good to go.

Just a few thoughts....

Good Luck,

Mike

f your right on top of some beds and scrapes and rubs its possible yu may have penetrated the deers core bedding area, which is good for yu if yu shoot one first day or so but ive found when i do that ive only got about about 1 maybe 2 days in that area to make a kill and then regardless of how carefull yu are yu have done stunk it up and they will go nocturnal or move to less pressured area. i like to set up on the edges of the bed area and where they move to and from food, water etc to the bed area.just think about it, if sumone kept comeing in yur bedroom stinking it up yu might move to a different one if yu were a deer.yu seem to spend plenty of hrs in the woods for sure, but try hunting occasionally the hrs yu been going to the house at and see if just maybe thats the time the deer are sneakin thru.

Went out yesteday evening, in the same area where the pics are (the stand pics) and it got dark on me so i headed back.....you could still see but was kinda hard. Well my uncle was in treestand and we were calling for a few minutes and i decided to get up and head back towards his stand.....i heard him make small whistle (which was telling me to stop walking) and by time i realized it....a herd of deer ran threw the words...they had walked up behind me.

then we were walking threw the woods and we came up on a old stump that was soft and rotten and there were prints in the stump and you could smell fresh urine....and there were rubs near it. How long before the urine scent dies away?? Just wondering how long before he had been there.

Rule of thumb .......
small bucks rub small trees.
big bucks rub whatever size tree they damn well want to!

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it depends on variables, if the stump was already damp from a dew or melted frost before it was pee'd on then logically that would probably help keep the urine viable so the smell could probably last longer, if on a warm or dry or breezy day with very low humidity the urine could dry up fairly quickly and it also depends on how much urine was pee'd onto the stump.

All variables, all why its nice to be there and see it for yourself to give a good answer.
