Remington, Sako or Tikka- Varmint rifle!??

Postby matt_3479 » Sun Oct 18, 2009 1:17 pm

Im looking for a varmint rifle. I was looking at a Remington 700 LSS grey laminate, Tikka T3 Laminate or the Sako A7. I want it in a 243. win, toped with a nice scope. The 243. win would be flat, fast, and would knock the coyote away any day. And if i take it for whitetail then theres no problem. What do you suggest between these rifles i named off??

The rem 700 is a fine rifle and you probaly wont find anyone to disagree. That being said i have a tikka T-3 lite in 300wsm and love it.I would choose it over the 700.To comare the tikka to the sako is like comparing a chevy to a cadillac

If accuracy is your prime concern, and you handload, bear in mind that the majority of benchrest guns are still built up on Remington 700 actions. It still has about the fastest locktime and is easier and more econimical to modify than the others.

If MOA and factory ammo is fine, pick the one you like best in your hands. They're all good. I agree with Tony on the relative quality of Sako over Tikka, but the Tikka action has a faster lock time. Sako's are wonderful, but they do not benefit much with conversion to target use. I've seen a few Tikkas modded to benchrest use. But by and large, the Remington will still outshoot them both. But not without handloading and proper case prep.

Tikka or nothin'

I would argue that the Tikka is your best option. After researching this for myself I found that the best combination of quality and price was the T3 Lite. Its a guaranteed MOA shooter with a nicer action than the 700.

My decision was also based on the fact that I needed a Left handed bolt, and Tikka makes a really nice one...

Best of luck in whatever you choose.

I would go with the Remington. However the only Tikka I have ever owned was a T3 in .300 WSM. I couldn't get it to shoot that great. But between the Sako and Tikka. Your lookin at about 200 bucks difference. The new A7 is nothing but a Tikka T3, based on what i have read. Its all in what feels good to you. The money is coming out of your pocket no one elses...If you do decide to go with the Remington, if you will be doing long range shots look into the Model 700 VS SF II! Its a heavy gun, but great for long range accuracy!!
