Repair for an antler that has fallen off?

Postby jwg77 » Fri Dec 05, 2008 11:26 pm

How would you get an antler back on the skull plate that has fallen off like it was shed? It came off at the pedicle when the deer fell. Would super glue work? I would like to put this rack on a plaque.
Thanks in advance for any help here.

Your best bet is to talk to a taxidermist about it. Maybe look up a local guy and give him a call, he may be able to help or give suggestions over the phone. I really dont think that super glue will work though.

Antler repair

If you have the skull cap from this deer which I am assuming you have with the other antler you should be able to expoxy this back on...Don't think super glue will hold it...no way....two part expoxy is usually stronger than just about anything that you bond with it..You can get it in the twin tube dispenser anywhere...Walmart...You will need to keep it motionless while it sets...this is important....you can buy quick setting expoxy to shorten this time period...also depending on how it came off if you think you need it you could possibly embed some type of rod or post or screw in the skull cap and drill a hold in the end of the antler just big enough to accept the rod and then expoxy the whole thing putting a little expoxy up into the antler before inserting onto rod...Keeping it motionless while it sets is critical....
good luck.

I was gonna suggest drilling a hole in the skull and antler big enough to hold a dowel rod and epoxy.

I have done the dowel rod trick, and it works.

fixing antlers

Postby timstaxidermy » Wed Mar 11, 2009 12:24 am

all the previous suggestion would work. i think you would be wise to use a large diameter piece of like #9 wire drill a receiving hole in antler and match to the base . prefit it before gluing it down though.
you can use two part epoxy as suggested and let it set after holding in place . try not to get glue on cape as its hard to remove later when set.
