rifle for a kid

What would be a good rifle for a 12 year old kid about 5foot 70 pounds to hunt deer with?

Nobody has replied to your question about what cal. would be good for a person your size, but what we start Lil' people with normally where I'm from is .243 cal., unless they need somthing with alittle more nock down power, then I would suggest .270 cal. Both are popular, and you should be able to find ammo for either, anywhere. Good Luck!

What would be really good for you is a 30-30..

I killed my 5X5 bull elk with it and a doe...

So i think that is a great choice!

Good luck hunting and welcome to the board!

God bless :D

12 Gauge is right, if you can handle the recoil that a heavier bullet will give you, the 30-06 has a lot of different loads, (bullet types), on the market that will cater to the way you want to hunt, from varmits, to the largest of speicies.

12 gauge and the 30-06 will work. Good deer guns right there. Buck shot in the shotgun works best for me.

the 30/30. Its a little more forgiving placement wise. Recoil is not much more than a 243 .NEF handi-rifle would make a good rifle.Safety is great and shot placement will be made carefully. If you need more range than 200 yds. try the 7mm/08.

Marlin 336 in the good ole 30.30, with 150 gr Win Power Point bullets. It doesn't kick much, low noise, and kills deer dead. :)

Sounds like your son is about the size I was when I started. I use a Remington in .270. .260, 7mm-08, .308 all come to mind as good smaller cartridges.

No one has mentioned a 7mm - 08. Not to be confused with a 7mm mag.

This is a great caliber with not much recoil. Very comparable to a .243 with a little more knockdown power.

All the choices mentioned however are great. When it comes down to it, "its all about bullet placement"

Hello There,
Have you got enough opinions and suggestions yet?
I have 3 sons, the oldest 21,youngest 16,with all very slim builds. We own 2 ,7mm-08, They have all shot several whitetails, no problem with recoil.
I'm sure some of the other calibers are good also. Good Luck!!

good child rifle

Postby naneeslayer » Tue Dec 20, 2005 9:50 am

i recently purchased a rossi .243 single shot youth rifle for my 8 year old daughter. it has about as much recoil as her .410 pump. she killed her first deer with it a week ago sunday. i would recommend this gun to anyone! a solid little gun that younger kids won't be scared to shoot.
hard work & clean livin'
