My nephew is almost a spitting image of that body frame. Last year he got a single shot, break action .243 and loves it. It doesn't kick very hard, but it's a very appropriate caliber for whitetail and the gun fits his body.

Another good choice is a Rem 260 or 6.5 Swede. Rem and Ruger have the youth version and Win offers the 6.5 X55 in the Classic. Only a little more recoil than the 243.

Rifle for a kid

Postby anthony passero » Thu Sep 02, 2004 11:45 am

Get a .260 or a 6.5, I lost 2 deer as a kid with a .243 , I know i hit them both. 1 waqs a big buck that ran over a ridge and another hunter claimed. I bought my 270 that year.I was 16

Hey,
I'm pretty little and I shoot a Remington 257 Roberts. Alot of people complain about them screwing up the meat, thats because they shoot 117 grains, I shoot a 100 grains and it does awesome, however they don't make that gun in a Remington anymore, but Ruger makes a model 77 in a 257 Roberts which would probably do just as good. I am also a fan of 270's and 30 06's. Everyone thinks an 06 boots ya but if you cut the stock off to fit you and put a decelerater pad on, it might kick a little still, but not enough to hurt.-

The 243 is an awesome caliber for young and old as long as you dont strike a twig on the way to the dead zone I've found my 100gr. corelock slugs mushroomed out about the size of a dime and very uniform which is pretty impressive for that caliber I also witnessed my brother dropping a little 7 pointer at 415yds. in it's tracks in open ground with no wind you should go to your local walmart and check out rossi combos two barrels any rifle caliber with a 50 cal. black powder barrel or shotgun barrel about $250 their a pretty impressive gun for any budget.no matter what you shoot accuracy is everything and to get to know your gun and trajectory buy lots of ammo and practice practice practice and you will be able to make professional judgement on any shot

gun for deer hunting for a kid

Postby WVoverdraw » Tue Oct 12, 2004 7:46 pm

around here the landscape is brushy and theres not alot of open deer country so our shots on deer are no more than 150 yards unless we are hunting farm land or old strip mines so around here the majority of young hunters use a 30-30 winchester in a leveraction i used and still have a 35 remington in a model 760rem pump its a good shortrange riffle but still very effective on deer out to 200 yards and a perfect cal for young hunters just learning

I'd have plenty of faith in a 35 in these missouri woods but I do have a couple of 80ac. fields where i hunt so the 243 serves both functions. But I did miss out on a herd of does a couple years ago in a small patch of honeysuckle and greenbrier. last year I picked up an old savage 30-30 bolt action I might take time to put a scope on it and see how it sights for a woods gun. MY DAD USED A 32-20 STEVENS I think thats the make, hex barrel pump for as long as I can remember and he's taken deer at 100yds. and us six boys ate a deer a year all our lives.

Make sure the kid is comfortable and confident.

Postby Dcolwill » Thu Oct 21, 2004 3:31 pm

:? I don't have the luxury of hunting in a rifle area like where I grew up.

If a rifle is allowed, as a kid I started with a .257 roberts and had no kick to worry about. Later I went to a .270, but must admit although I loved the flat shooting out as far as I could see, it did kick.

A kid just starting out will likely want something light and small. The break action .243 looks great although I've never shot one.

My personal recommendation is a Marlin lever action 30-30. With their micro-groove rifling I was able to drop a running fox at just over 100 yards. Never had it fail me on any deer at any range. And learning to work the lever action without removing the gun from my shoulder I can stay close on the target for a second or third shot faster than the guy with the semi-auto 270 or 20-06 because my 30-30 recoil is not taking me more than an inch or 2 off the target to ready for another shot. With the 270 I had to bring the barrel back down 18 inches to aim for a followup.

Once a young hunter gets confident shooting a Marlin or Winchester 30-30
it will be hard to convince him to drag something else into the woods. Unless you're after mule deer or antelope in open country, he'll never find range to be an issue. The hammer safety is great for a beginning hunter as there is never any doubt when he has put the gun back in the safety position.
My eyes focus forward like all predators so I know I was born to hunt.

.243 or 30-30 are good choices. Have a 14yr. old nephew that is small in stature that shoots my .50 Hawken with 70grs. of Swiss behind a patched roundball. If you're also interested in the muzzleloader route.

Here is an Idea

Postby dsmith_88 » Sun Nov 14, 2004 12:23 am

.243 Model 7 Remington is specifically made for a woman or kid. It is made short, and does not kick. Not only is it a good gun for kids and women, I have used mine for years now. It has good knock down power for the behind the shoulder shot for kids, and can reach those long shot distances. I have killed deer with mine from 25yds up to 450 yds in open fields. You can get them at a good price, and can't beet the shooting ability.

My answer is - STAY AWAY FROM them little squirt guns. Get him something he can use the rest of his life. Don't skeer 'em with numbers and stuff. My daddy gave me a 30 / 30 when I was 13. Gave me one shell - open sights. Day before buck season. Took one shot at the target.

Doubt if I even hit it.

Went hunting with him the next day. We shot a BIG 11 point PA whitetail. We were fighting about who was gonna tag it. Neither of us wanted to. Because we still wanted to hunt. My sister Jeannie ended up tagging it. Got her picture in the paper. Won the Local Buck Pool contest.

I got her old Model 721 Remington bolt 30 / 06. Never saw another buck the rest of the season. I was happy to be rid of that 30 / 30 after 4 hours.

Be like Ernest - on BUCKMASTERS - use the Bubba Bazooka. It's a 85 / 60 Whitney Houston. It will blow a hole through the woods as big as the Holland tunnel.

yeah a .243 is a good beginner gun but i also have had a 7mm .08 which is a good gun for ne 1 to hunt with. it has good range and enough power to give a younger person who might not shoot as accurate a little lee-way if they dont get exactly a kill shot. another good thing is they hardly kick and are extremely reliable. or like someone said earlier a .257 Roberts is a good gun but they arent made anymore

Good luck on your hunt. :D
