Rifle Scope

Postby MarkHunter » Fri Jun 08, 2007 4:00 pm

I just spent 292.58 dollars on a new scope, its a Leupold VX II 2-7x32. I also got the rings and scope mount included in this price, its going to be attached to my Remington Model 700 .270 cal. Do you guys agree that this is a good choice and a good set up? Also im going to want to buy some rounds for it, what kind of rounds would you suggest for target practice and what rounds would you suggest for hunting, up here we hunt, deer, goat, and bear. Thank you

You should sight in and practice with the same ammo you intend to hunt with. Accuracy can change from brand to brand and bullet weight to bullet weight. I would suggest buying a couple boxes of different brands of bullets and see which one groups best out of your rifle.

Kwack said it right. Practice with what you hunt with. My .270 likes Hornady 140gr. Customs, but yours may like Remington Core-Lokts. It is up to your rifle what it likes the best and you should take the time to find out what it wants. You have to remember, the tighter your group at 100yds, the tighter it is going to be at farther distances. If you have a 2" group at 100yds, figure on a 4" group at 200yds, 8" group at 300yds, so forth and so on.

I also think that you chose a fantastic scope, but I would have probably chosen a 3-9x40 for that caliber. That is just me though. Leupold makes a great scope and I dont think that you will go wrong with that one. You probably got the right scope for your area as I dont believe that you will be making to many shots past 100yds, like most of us here. I just like to have a little more magnification and light transmission. As stated, thats just me.

Like Doc I also agree the scope is one step under what I would have confortably chosen myself. Given the game you mentioned , I would have gone with a 3/9 40 or 50 and for the main reason the light reception. A 32 works great under solid daylight hours but as the sun starts setting and light begins to fade the view in the scope begins to fade rapidly. A forty will give you an extra ten minutes before the sun sets. A Fifty will take you right into twilight, not that I am promoting dark shots, but when that buck steps out at dark thirty ,as we refer to it, you want to make sure you know it is the buck you want to shoot. The 32 would have left you blind twenty minutes ago.
Take your father and kids hunting. You never no when you won't be able to again.
