Rifle Shooting high

Postby kens3313 » Wed Oct 05, 2005 10:47 pm

Last year I went on a hunting trip in north west Texas. I live in houston and had sighted in my rifle and it was dead on, I never bumped the gun to make it off. I shot and missed a few bucks, and decided to check to see if it was still on, and sure enough it was shooting 8 inches high at 100 yards. Got home and went to the rifle range out of couriosity if it was still on and it was hitting 4 inches high with the first shot cold barrel. Could this be a altitude change problem, scope, or mounts. I am shooting a weatherby 30-06 with a bushnell 4x12x40.

I'd re-zero it and see what happens.

Make sure all your screws are tight on the scope and the rings also. If it rezeros and stays Id wouldnt worry about it. If it doesnt I might consider contacting Bushnell about it.

Ive had the same load since I got the gun. I reload my own bullets. Im going to try to tighten up the mounts but Ive heard 1 in every 5 scopes are made are defective, maybe its the scope. Ive been looking at buying a leupold 3x9x50 8) :)

A cousin of mine had a similar problem with his scope. He tried everything including tightening the screws and other "quick fixes" but nothing worked. Then he bought a new scope and all was well again. Maybe it is the problem but maybe not. Make sure you take enough practice shots to be sure of the consistency of it's inconsistencies. Perhaps you just aren't aligning yourself the same way every time. If you can return the scope for free that's great but if you need to buy a new one then it's a pricy mistake if it wasn't the scope so be sure before you return it if you chose to do so. Best of luck in fixing this problem.

Well im pretty sure its not me, im a pretty decent shot and I squeezed them off. The scope was just a cheap 60 dollar bushnell I got for a gift so I think that could be the problem. Thanks for the info it always helps I was just wondering if the change of altitude would make it shoot that far off. Here in houston about 200 ft elevation up to north texas. Would the density or weather make it shoot off 8 inches higher? :?

No, you would have to change elevation by 500ft. or more to see a very noticeable difference. And that difference would be much smaller than eight inches.

Like I said...re-zero or your scope has went to squat. I could tell a story...but it would be too long winded and I'm not much at typing all this. Good luck.

Well thats my problem I have re zeroed it and it will put a good pattern that day and I let the barrel cool off and not get too hot while im sighting it in. Then my first shot a few weeks later will be high. So could be the scope, like I said it is a cheaper bushnell scope ive seen sold at walmart for 60 bucks.

Just got a new leupold 3x9x40 VX-I scope. Shot it yesterday and today to make sure it stays on, it is shooting great. Shot 6 shots in a group size of a quarter at 100 yards, and I got it set 1 inch high. So thats a reliefe, it was that other pos scope, thanks for yalls help, always learn something new in here :D

I've seen a lot of different bushnells drift like that because they aren't as shockproofed as some of the better quality scopes. Had one to do the same thing on my 308. Maybe that new scope will solve all your problems!
