Right Mossberg for a 12 yr. Old?

Postby dcamacho13 » Sat Apr 03, 2010 7:21 pm

Hey everyone, I have an 11 year old brother who is getting into shooting, and I want to get him his first shotgun in January for his 12th birthday. I was wondering what an ideal size Mossberg shotgun for him would be. Do I go youth, bantum or super bantum? 12, 20 gauge or .410? He weighs about 70 lbs. and is about 4 ft. 7 in., if that helps at all. Thanks for your help.

I would get him a 20ga pump. It doesnt have alot of kick with field loads during practice, small game hunting and learning safety and he can use high brass loads for turkey.

The 20 gauge bantam pump gun is a great shotgun. I've fired them and they look, handle and perform great.

Like was said a 20 ga. I own a Mossberg 500 20ga combo. Great all around gun. You can cut down the stock if need be for his pull. 20ga can do it all espescialy for youth/beginning small stature hunters/shooters.

The Mossberg I mentioned ( 20 gauge Bantam model) has a removable and replaceable stock piece which can be added or removed as needed. It also has a screw-in choke system and a great, camo finish. It's perfect for the serious hunter with a smaller stature, or someone who wants a bit more of a challenge when hunting (over some of the big, magnum guns, for instance).

I used an old .410 and a new Mossberg 20ga when I was 12.
