Rust on new Rifle

Postby JakeO » Sat Jan 02, 2010 12:40 pm

I just bought my first bolt action rifle less than three months ago, every time i shoot it i clean the barrel, and pretty much everytime i take it out, i oil it down. many people have told me that this is a tad extreme, yet i still found i tiny bit of rust on the middle of the barrel. i know its not much, but i would like to stop it now. what could this be from? i have heard that keeping it in a case can be bad, but i dont know.

thanks,

Here's a couple of tips:

1) After having it out in the weather, bring it in the house and let it warm up before you wipe it down and clean it. This will let it acclimate to the temperature it will be stored at. If the gun is outside and gets cold, then you bring it inside a warm house you will get a small amount of condensation on the metal parts and if not wiped away will cause some rust. This is one reason it is said not to store it in the case. The case will be cold too and any condensation will be absorbed by the case and stay wet right next to the gun. Huge rust problem there.

2). Make sure you are using a real oil. Lots of gun sprays are not meant to be used as oils. WD-40 falls into that category. Soak a rag with gun oil and wipe the gun down once. Let it sit for an hour and come back and wipe it down one more time. This will give your first rub down time to soak in and the second will be your protective coat. This keeps the gun from drying out in storage.

Let me know how you make out.

If you keep your guns in a safe, that can cause rust. Fire rated safes or safes kept in basements are always humid. You need to add heating elements to ward off moisture, or use de-humidifying blocks.
