safe to shoot slugs through MOD choke?

Postby rockfish » Sat Jan 30, 2010 2:28 pm

Obviously a rifled barrel would be preferred but I have an older pump gun that I'd like to shoot slugs through. These would not be sabot slugs but Rem Buckhammer or similar.

Is it safe to shoot regular slugs in a MOD barrel?

A modified choke with rifled slugs should work just fine.

The full bore foster style slugs ie: Brenneke's, Remington Slugger, Federal Hi Shocks or Classics, Federal Tru-balls, Winchester's etc will be fine in a modified choke. I would buy 3 or 4 brands at least to see what shoots best and I'd consider a sighting device of some kind. B-square scope mounts work good, arent too hard to remove to convert the shotgun back to a bird gun. You tap the trigger assembly pins out and the B-Square fits over the reciever and is screwed in place. Not the best system but better then a bead etc. A gunsmith can also drill and tap the side of the reciever for a scope mount thats designed for that. Most pumps and autos are too thin on top of the reciever for after market drilling and tapping for a scope mount. If its a vent rib barrel I had a set of iron sights that came in two different styles, sticky/glue on and screw clamp design that fit the vent rib. Modified choke 12ga-20ga with a sighting system either iron sights or scoped it will still be a fairly short range gun. Maybe only minute of deer out to 50 yards. Some rare ones are accurate out to 75yds-100yds but theyre like hitting the lottery.
