Safest, strongest climber stand?

Postby Jacob Robinson » Fri Oct 23, 2009 4:45 pm

I am wanting to get a climber stand. I have never hunted out of one. I have fallen out of a ladder stand twice due to faulty equipment. not fun. I am looking for the safest climber stand i can get. any suggestions? thanks.

Tree Lounge, Tree Lounge, Tree Lounge, Im scared of heights and falling. Only climber I own. Old Man treestands are a close second but Tree Lounge's hold the tree a little better. Ones that use straps, blades, teeth to hold the tree are a wheelchair waiting to happen. Ive bow hunted for 30 years. Ive seen alot of stands/manufacturers come and go, safest are most ladders and Tree Lounge, period. Takes a little getting used to using the Tree Lounge bowhunting adapter but once you do, you'll swear by it.

I love my Lone wolf tree stand and would say it is top shelf for quality.

I bought my first Tree Lounge around 1990. Lost it during my divorce, actually it was stolen. Tree Lounge's dont slide, fall, squeak etc. Up to the person, I value my neck. Its heavier then alot of others. The bow hunting adapter makes bowhunting easier out of it. It places you out away from the stand and you can shoot almost a 360 from it. Alot of the time I dont stand in mine I crouch on the edge of the seat and shoot my bow. For gunhunting they are the cats meow. Theres a few copiers of the design so if you look around you may be able to save a few bucks but Ive never used any of them. If you get on the Tree Lounge website you can get a video that shows you how to use them. The designer Bob Hice passed away a few years ago but last I knew they were still going strong. You can get wheels for it to turn it into a deer cart also. The kids that hunt with us and are old enough to use climbers love ours. I doubt I would let them use any other designs anyhow. I know too many guys that have fallen with climbers of doubtful lineage. I believe it was Bill Jordan that fell with his and crushed an ankle several years ago? Had a guy show up at deer camp last year with a $350 climber he got at Gander mountain or somewhere. He tried climbing some hickories and finally got it up about 12' on one before it lost its"grip" and slid down about 4'. Scared him to death. He borrowed a Tree Lounge and climbed a hickory and loved it. Sold his slider and bought a Tree Lounge. His had cables and you could adjust them as you climbed, neat design, too bad it wouldnt stay in a tree.

Yea i was looking at the tree lounges. My only thing is the seat. It seems like you lay back too much. Is this true?

Thats one reason I didnt get hte tree lounge. I sleep enough sitting up in mine, I would hate to lay back in one of those. I would never kill anything. lol

Yea that was my thought exactly. I dozed off in my ladder stand this morning as a matter of fact and woke up right before i started leaning lol. Another thing i didnt like was how you have to like straddle the seat when climbing. Ill probably end up getting one though.

I too fell asleep in my tree stand (Big Game two man stand) and found my self drooling on my sleeve. I put my head down on the gun rest guard. Disgusting!

As far as a self climber, I have a Summit Goliath and been very happy with it. I did put some camo no slip tape on it for extra safety.

The Tomcat is the safest stand I have found. There is no way you can fall out of it if you go to sleep. (Well I am sure someone can find a way)
treeclimber.com is there page.

Well my worry is the stand falling. My dad was telling me that his slid down a tree 25 feet while he was in it. Got me kinda worried about it.

If you follow manufacturer instructions, take safety precautions and dont climb a loose bark tree, you should be fine.

the Tomcat has 1/2 sharp spikes that actually bite into the tree. No way it can slip ( I am sure some could make it slip) , In 12 years not the 1st time has my stand shifted of slipped. The last stand I used was a loggy bayou and it would slip a little on the tree if you were climbing a slick tree.

from their page
Each TomCat model utilizes cat like teeth to dig into the bark.

I have used a Tree Lounge for several years, I feel the safest in this stand than any others , the only complaint is it is a little on the heavy side, mine is one of the 90 something models , maybe lighter now. I also use a summit Cobra, no longer availabe basically its a viper with a climbing rail. This is a safe stand, but I dont feel as safe to get really high as I do the Tree Lounge.

I think you'll be happy with it. I know you'll be safe. You can adjust the angle some where your not leaning back as much. Video and operating instructions that comes with it will explain it. Good Luck

I would go with a Summit. Either a Viper SS (what I have) or the Goliath or Titan. Dont let the cable scare you, these stands have better bite into any tree in my opinion, and I have used alot of them. The cables can get worn out after alot of years, but you can replace them easily. There is only one other brand of climber that I would buy and that would be the Equalizers. They have a pretty cool leveling feature on theirs. I may pick one of them up next year to add to my arsenal.

I have a summit goliath and like it for the most part. The only thing about the summit stands I do not like is that the platform for me when you stand on it is kind of small. (I am not to keen on height so that maybe a problem just related to me) I wish it was a little bit bigger. The arm rail on the seat can be a problem at times when drawing your bow. I find myself having to lean forward so my limbs on my bow doesn't hit the rail. I think they make an open seat where there is no rail but I like the rail to a certain extent so I can rest my bow on it. I feel a little bit more secure in case I fall asleep like many mention on here.

My only issue with the tomcat would be them big old spikes digging that far into a tree, would damage it pretty badly. When I do tree work and I have to climb it,I have to use pole climbers and the spikes will really do a lot of damage to the tree,so I have to figure the tomcat spikes would do the same thing. The tree may or may not survive being spiked like thaT.
Want my ammo?Ok,stand downrange.

I have a Summit Viper SS and I love it.. it's more comfortable than any other stand that I own and is extremely safe. I'd recommend it to anyone!!
