Sandy Soil Question

Postby deergrower » Tue Jul 06, 2004 10:18 am

I live in Northeast Texas and have real sandy soil but want to plant some food plots but need help to figure out what would be the best thing or things to plant can anyone help me out here? Plus what is the best time to plant for a winter plot here as well?
The more kids we can get into the woods and on the creeks the more kids we can keep off of crack and out of the streets!!

I have blackland, sandy loam, to almost sugar sand. I have owned land in Gregg County with sand. Rye grass, most types, oats, turnips, wheat, and clovers work. I have found the expensive mixes to not do as well as rye and oats. If you cannot disk and cover the seed, stay with gulf rye.

Get a winter seed blend from your local feed and seed. It will grow on most any type of soil with out working the ground. Most of the seed blends include rape seed, austrian winter peas, clover, oats, clover and winter wheat.

Plant before a rain then fertilize. No need to lime but, lime will increase your tonage.
