Scents

I was wondering if anyone use's scents during the pre rut and what kind you use? Would you want to make a couple mock scrapes or put out some doe-n-heat? Thanks Jesse

Hold off on using the doe -in-heat until just before the rut starts. Using it too early will hurt you more than it will help you. As a general rule, I never use doe in heat until I see the bucks start chasing does. I don't use much cover scents so I can't really help you there. I try to manage my scent as much as possible. Good luck.

KwackWacker is right on the money on that putting out 'Doe in Heat/Estrus' scents at the wrong time can ruin things, the deer know all too well if the rut has started or not and deer finding it in a mock scrape may mean they ignore that scrape after that point.

What I have done is get some Buck urine and make a mock scrape before the rut and I had good results on most occasions that i've done it, normally with in just a couple days a real buck came in and took over the mock scrape by tearing it up and peeing in it himself.

If you find a real bucks scrape and hang a stand nearby, you could make a mock scrape about 20-30yds away down the tree line (pick one with a low hanging branch) to make the scrape under, sprinkle some buck urine into your mock scrape and you could even tear up and sprinkle some urine into the real scrape as well to tell him 'hey i'm here now'.

When the buck comes back within a few days and he finds them it should upset him as he would no doubt see it as a sign of disrespect, when he finds his scrape with your buck urine and the other scrape nearby that you made and sprinkled buck urine he will likely tear both of them up and repee them himself to tell you 'this is my area'.

The only problem might be if there is a lot of moonlight and he checks that scrape at night in the dark, with luck he may come through the area in shooting light.

If no buck responds or the scrapes get hit by the buck at night or on a day you can't hunt you can always wait a few days or a week and then redo the scrape or scrapes again yourself when you can sit in the stand for some days and see if he comes back.

So I would give that a try, I know it can work.
