Scope on my son's new rifle?

Postby DocRyan211 » Sat Dec 03, 2005 3:32 pm

I'm debating on wether or not to put a scope on my son's new rifle. I bought him a Rossi combo, 22, 243, and 20 guage shotgun. I'm a former military guy, so I learned to shoot without one, which I believe makes you a better shooter. I was thinking about putting the scope on the 243 barrel for my son for deer hunting. Can't decide, what do ya'll think???????

The problem with that scope choice is 2 fold..1. I don't think that it is available 2. since the pupil only opens about 2-3mm in daylight and up to 6-7mm at night divide 6mm into the object size and it will give the max power setting in low light conditions, thus about 6 power on a 40mm scope.

I would let him learn to use the .22 with open sights and put a 3-9x40 on the .243 barrel. I wouldnt let him shoot the .243 with scope until you thought he was proficient with the open sights on the .22. I used a .22/20ga with open sights until I was 11, when I recieved a .30-30 Winchester model 94 with a 3-9x30 Simmons on it. I still have that rifle with the same scope on it. It is fun to also go down to the river and shoot at turtles once he learns to shoot the .22. It will sink as soon as the .22 hits it. Good visual and fun as well as good practice.

Doc is right on. Leave open sights on the .22 and go snappin turtle practice shooting. Those a free targets. The cool thing is that good shots are rewarded, because the next day, you can walk around the edge of the pond and get a body count. I knew I was a lot better shot when I got 18 one day.

I never was one for scopes. Once he learns to shoot well with open sights, I'd ask him if he likes to use those, or if he wants to try the scope, but you're really asking a question about personal preference. Good luck and have fun.
