Scope suggestions needed

Postby cjben » Mon Oct 12, 2009 9:11 am

I am looking for a new scope for my Remington 870 12 gauge slug gun with rifled barrel. I do not like the scope I have on there now. I am short and have no neck  ,so it is hard for me to get a good sight picture through the scope. I have it pulled back on the mounts as far as it will go,still not close enough to my eye without being hunched over the gun. It is even worse when I have my hunting clothes on. I need suggestions on a scope that has a bigger opening to see through(sorry I am not familiar with the proper terms). How about the red dot scopes? I will be making shots out to 100 yards maybe a touch farther. thanks for any suggestions!! Ben

Go to a sporting goods store and check out a few different ones, buy the best one you can afford or more. You get what you pay for with optics. Cheaper scopes are apt to have a narrower eye relief, which sounds like what you are expiriencing. Leupold has a special shotgun scope that has the paralax adjusted for shotguns, so do other brands. 1x4 should be plenty of magnification for a shotgun. I don't have any expirience with red dots, I have an issue with my eyes, I see 2 dots so have stayed away from them. I have a few Leupold scopes and am very satisfied with their quality. Do you have a problem with the shotgun fitting you or is it all a scope problem? JMHOs

i have a mossberg 500 and the scope i put on it cost me 45 bucks from wal mart. clear view every time i shoulder my gun. i believe in finding things that work for me. i bought a gun that didnt cost and arm and a leg and a scope that was considered bottom of the line. hadem for three years six deer down. my suggestion find somewere with a good return policy. try some scopes out and pick one thats right for you not the most expensive one you can afford. iv had this gun out in snow storms as well as heavy rains and it never gives me a problem and like i said filled both my tags with it for the last three years. thats just my opinion though

Leupold has a very adjustable eye relief that should help you.I have many diffrent brand scopes and have to agree with cjg.You get what you pay for.I have a 870 slug gun and it kicks like a mule.It has actually knocked the reticles (cross hairs) loose in my leupold twice.Thankfully they have a great warranty program and fixed it.Maybe that will help you decide. Now i just got fedup with the 870 and fianally bought beretta automatic slug gun.Im now looking for a scope and am leaning toward the leupold varix III 1.75-6.The 870 has the 1-4 it gets the job done but sometimes i wish i ahad a little more magnification

I shoot an 11-87 with rifled barrel . I have a burris2.5 to 7 and love it. Shot guns are really hard on scopes . Its been true for 7 years.Life time warranty!

I shoot a wide Red Dot on my deer shotgun and swear by it. Switched in '03 and never looked back. Last year I was at 26(? + 1 or 2,old age) deer straight and missed(my fault, tough shot), then came back and took 3 more in 2 days. They have limitations, long range shots are a little less precise(100 yards+). I even have an inline mounted with one. Several kids in our group and adults have made the switch. Buy one made for shotguns, they are tougher then the rimfire etc ones. I carry a spare battery for mine but Ive never needed it. I switched the battery out last year for my peace of mind and it was still working after 5 years. I have the battery and a quarter for unscrewing the cover taped on my gun sling. Batteries are watch size, $1 ea at our local Wallys. We had one mounted on a S&W 629 .44mag and a Taurus Raging Bull .44 mag and they were the cats meow. Good Luck, hope this helps.

By the way, Red Dots are paralex free so when you look thru the scope and see the red or green dot thats where the slug goes. My deergun is a synthetic Wichester 1300 with rifled barrel and rifle sights.
