Shed Hunting 09

Postby NYBuckhunter » Sat Feb 14, 2009 8:42 pm

I figured Id start a general thread where everyone can share their shed hunting stories and pics for this year. Ive been out a few times, but havent had any luck yet, I think most of the bucks are just starting to drop around here. Im hoping to get out for a while tomorrow with my daughter if its not too cold out.

I never really went out and looked for sheds, I just happen to stumble over one now and then. When I was a young lad I remember my mother found a perfect 8 pt. shed, they only laid about 5 yards apart.

I have been out a few times as well. But I dont think they have dropped here in WI yet. I did see 2 small bucks a week or two ago an they still had both side on.

Is it normal for a buck to loose his antlers so close together?

Some deer tend to move very little during the late winter, so its possible that you were in one of the "yarding" areas where he spent alot of time.

Blackbirdhill, that's more sheds than I found in a lifetime. To bad, at least two of them aren't going to be around next year!

dang!

That's nice.

Deer around here still have their antlers and I'm surprised.

So do deer shed them both at the same time or do they just fall off whenever?

Bucks will tend to keep their antlers longer in areas where there are not enough bucks to get all the does bred in the first rut, those unbred does will come back into heat every 28-30 days.

A buck is fertile and can breed when it has its antlers but after they are dropped the buck becomes infertile for that season. If bucks keep finding does out there that need to be bred they will create the hormones to keep their antlers up until they don't find any more unbred does or the time in the late winter/early spring when the amount of sunlight (photo period) shuts off the does heat cycle.

The drop in photo period/sunlight that starts the rut will also shut it off on an unbred does in the spring when the sunlight increases past a similar point.

As far as when the bucks lose their antlers, i'm pretty sure on most bucks the antlers start getting loose and when they pass under a tree or jump a fence etc the loose antler will get snagged and pulled off so one antler might come off a day or more before the second one falls off.

I wouldn't be surprised if a buck as he gets 2-3 years old or older and if he feels both the antlers getting really loose its possible he might rub them on a limb or bush until they both fall off just to get rid of them, which would explain why some people find both antlers from the same buck (matched pair) under the same tree or next to the same bush.

That's a cool rack. How do you think he was killed?
In the top picture, are you giving us the finger on purpose? :P

Haha no I'm not doing that on purpose lol! Most likely he was wounded by a archery hunter because we wound him in the bow only area.
