shed mounts

Postby Tenpoint » Tue Mar 30, 2010 8:45 am

A friend of mine sent me this email text below. Since I have never mounted sheds, I was hoping to get some input from the folks here on the forum. I will direct my friend to this post, so he can read the responses.

Thanks,
Tenpoint

"Hope all is well with you and the family. As you know one of my newest pastimes is feeding the big bucks in my backyard in December/early January and photographing them and their "racks". Then when the spring rolls around I try to do a couple hikes/week in my backyard bush to try an locate a shed or two. Up until last night I have not been successful and was beginning to think I was going to have to throw in the towel and say "maybe next year". However, last night I found a nice 8-point shed, both antlers in perfect shape, laying about 6 feet from each other. I was then able to go through my photos and locate the exact buck that had dropped them. The attached photo is about 50 yards away from where I found the shed. Unfortunately out of the 4 bucks that I fed every night for a month and half this past winter, this 8 pointer was actually the smallest rack. I know there is a 10 pointer, a 12 pointer, and an "irregular" rack that was massive, in somewhat close proximately to my backyard feeding station. The 12- pointer actually had only one antler for 3 or 4 days, so I know its real close.

Anyways, the reason I am emailing you is to ask if you could give me some tips/ideas on how I maybe able to mount the shed that I found. Most of the websites talk about using the "skull" to mount the rack, but of course my antlers are on there own. Any ideas/experience with this?"

I did a google search for 'mounting deer sheds' and found a bunch of info:
They also make a "shed adapter" that replaces the skull plate and then can be mounted

Step 1
Choose a plaque that is the right size to complement your sheds. The plaque should be slightly larger than the shed. The darker color of the plaque will show off the lighter-colored sheds.

Step 2
Clean the sheds with a stiff cleaning brush to remove any dirt and debris. If the sheds have mud or damp soil on them, let them dry before brushing.

Step 3
Remove any dirt stains by wiping the sheds with a solution of ½ cup bleach and ½ cup water. Let the sheds dry.

Step 4
Position each shed on the plaque. Make a mark on the plaque under the base of each shed.

Step
5Drill a 1/8-inch pilot hole through each of the marks on the plaque. Place one shed at a time in position, and drill another pilot hole through the back of the plaque, using the existing hole, into the base of the shed. Repeat for the opposite shed.

Step
6Apply a drop of epoxy glue into the holes in the bases of the sheds. Hold the sheds in the correct position, over the holes in the plaque, and insert wood screws from the back of the plaque into the bases of the sheds.

Step 7
Screw the wood screws into the bases of the sheds using a screwdriver. Screw just until snug and do not overtighten.

At first I thought this....

Then I read the post and my solution to the problem is that your friend should shoot the deer before they shed their antlers. Problem solved.

There's only two problems with that Kwack. 1) Those deer are on municipal land (no hunting) adjacent to a provincial park (also no hunting). 2) My friend is a pansy and does not hunt. To his defence, he is an excellent fisherman.

But thanks for the insighful suggestions Kwack.

Thanks for the research and suggestions Brow Tine.

Any other suggestions are also appreciated.

That's an opportunity to bring a new hunter to the fold and also hunt on land where the deer aren't pressured. It's all in how you look at it. Some people see hurdles, I see opportunities to jump higher.

They make replica skulls just for mounting sheds, etc. You can get them at most sporting goods stores. I cant remember what company makes them, but I think some have the "Bone Collector" name attached to them.

Mountain Mike makes a replica skull mount that is sold at Cabelas if thats what your going for. I make brackets for sheds that are do it your self but they display the sheds as they are with no covering system. You can adjust the sheds how ever you like. I dont know if Im allowed to promote my own company on here, but this seems relevant cause I had these same questions before I started my company. thanks guys.
