Shotgun for Deer hunting

Postby Knight50 » Fri Sep 11, 2009 6:18 am

Hey guys, new to this site. I'm looking for a shotgun for deer hunting, don't want to spend over 600. I have a browning Silver with a Mod Barrel. I thought about ordering a rifled barrel from Badger barrels, but the browning web site says they replace the forearm stock when ordering a rifled barrel to prevent damage to the stock and allow room for the barrel. Haven't been on the market for a deer shotgun for a long time. I heard Savage is releasing a very accurate 20ga bolt gun this month. I gave them a call and they said it would be two - four weeks before its released. The problem is getting one before the season starts in Nov. I guess the big dealers will get the first ones and I'm not sure how many will be released.

I would just get the barrel for the Browning. Changing the forearm is no big deal. You should be able to get the barrel, forearm and a scope for under 600. If you dont want to do that, check out the Remingtons, awesome guns and you can get the top of the line 870 slug gun with a scope for under 600.

From what i've also read trying to use the standard smoothbore forearm stock on the Browning Silver with a thicker rifled barrel can end with the forearm cracking.

The extra barrels for the Browning silver go for $325-400 area and the rifled slug barrels from Browning come with the correct forearm stock to fit the thicker rifled barrel and are supposedly included in the barrel price.

Lots of people that own the Silvers are happy with them, gas operated semi autos that are low recoil make for happy shooters so I see no need to go to another shotgun but i'm a bit biased as I own 3 Brownings myself, 2 rifles and a 12ga. Citori.

Since Walmart sells Browning shotguns and rifles, I would go there and see if they can order the slug barrel as it would easily be cheaper than one through a regular gun shop that is a Browning dealer and Walmart generaly gets the items they order within 1-2 weeks.

If you're a good shot, why not look into the H&R "Topper" series?

The super-dee-luxe model Ultra Slug Hunter LISTS at about $240, meaning you could get one for about $200, and have plenty left over for sights you may want or LOTS of AMMO!.

Of course....it's a single shot piece....But I like it!
