Slug barrel question

Postby Bone_Collector » Mon Nov 30, 2009 7:05 pm

I saw a similar thread about this on here and it kinda answered my question, but i wanted to be more specific.

I am thinking about getting a slug barrel for either my 12 or 20 ga shotgun. Leaning toward the 20, because i don't have a second 12 and do not want to be without a 12 for turkey etc.

I guess what i need to know is, does the 20 have enough umpf to get out there to 100 yds. I was told yes by a man that was at the range with the exact same 20 ga that i have (remington 870). He was shooting at 50 yds and had a group in a 2" circle in the bull. He said it was very capable of a 100 yd shot and had the velocity of a .50 ML.

Any thoughts or suggestions on what ammo to use.

Most of our younger hunters here in our camp use 20ga's. Scoped with a fully rifled barrel 100 yards should be no problem. Slug will depend on what your barrel prefers. I'm a Brenneke man, 99% of our 20ga hunters use Brenneke 20ga Shortfield Magnums and 20ga K.O.'s. We've only had one barrel so far that wouldnt shoot Brenneke's good enough for us. They shoot 20ga Lightfields(another awesome slug). Most modern slugs shoot good. If your wanting to shoot/reach out to 100 yards I'd skip the economy slugs ie: Federal Hi shocks, Remington Sluggers, Winchester's economy line etc. and go with the more premium/moderate price/type of slugs. Good Luck
