Somebody please help me!

Hi, im going to be 21 years old and i am a registered hunter in the state of nj and i am also a resident here. i do not have a Firearms Identification Card, but my grandfather wants to purchase me a 12ga Remington 870 shotgun for my 21st birthday so i can go hunting with him during firearm season. Do i need a FID card to possess this shotgun while im hunting? Somebody please help me so i can apply for the FID to get it in time for the season. Thanks
