stainless steel vs. blued

Postby Kentucky Deer Hunter » Mon Nov 27, 2006 7:51 am

Is there anyone that has a suggestion, comment, or recommendation about which barrel (stainless steel or blued) is better for a rifle. I live in Kentucky and may go north to hunt some, so the rifle will be subjected to cold weather. I would also like to know if there are any issues (accuracy, strength, etc...) with either barrel.

I will be purchasing a new 30-06 after Christmas so any help would be appreciated!

Thanks so much!

Stainless looks GREAT but not made for hunting. The blued is a much better choice for an avid deer hunter. To much bling!

My only suggestion would be to ditch the idea of getting a 30-06 and go with that 308 you are considering. I personally don't care for the shiney barrels myself.

I like ya Progers but I must disagree. The 06 is a prime hunting weapon that allows for many different types of game(all sizes).

I knew you would disagree, that is why I posted it. Yea, the 06 makes a pretty good squirrel rifle!

cuz, one could also say that the 308 is a prime hunting weapon that allows for many different types of game(all sizes), as well.

They both are capable but, as I said, the 308 is more accurate over further distance and you can't argue with that.

Agree with progers, 308's a better pick.

For cold weather, bolt action is best, stainless is very nice, but not necessary. It won't hinder you either, or be too shiny in a snowy backdrop.

To me personally, a bolt action and/or single shots are a more consistantly accrate rifle.

The stainless does look nice, I agree. You could always get a camo sock to put over it if glare ever became a problem.

I have a buddy of mine that recently purchased a Rugar 270 bolt action black synthetic w/stainless barrel and that puppy is one sweet rifle.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Progers, yeah I am looking at getting the Ruger M77 rifle. I was debating on the stainless steel barrel/synthetic stock or the blued barrel/wood stock. I think I may go with the stainless steel barrel. Do you remember if the stock was cheap looking/feeling?

Also I think I am going to get the gun in a .300 win mag. I plan on going elk hunting next year with a buddy of mine so I want something that will take care of the job. Do you think that the .300 win mag is too much gun for deer, or will it stop it in its tracks?

If you were referring to the stock on that Rugar, the answer would be NO. It was a really thin stock. Every feature about that Rugar was nice. I will see if I can get some pics of it from him!
