Stupid Rain

Postby DouglasSpear » Thu Sep 24, 2009 7:39 am

Looks like I won't get to hunt too much this weekend, on opening weekend, due to rain. Here in southwestern Ohio, it's supposed to rain Saturday morning and I assume will also be warm and humid. Sunday only has a 10% chance of rain but it's going to be a little warm. I'd really like to get out there, even if just to test the temperature (to know how to dress for next weekend) and to test the sunrise. Anyone know any Indian anti-rain dances?

If its raining my opening weekend. I'll be out there in the worst of it. Unless there is just to much lighting. That might be enough to get me out of my climbing stand.

Weather

Postby BaDaBing » Thu Sep 24, 2009 10:29 am

Weather predicting is not an exact science I always check it online and look at precent, if it's 80/90% chance you can bet it will rain. But if says 30/40% I would go. Good luck and have a good one....

The rain we've been getting isn't worth climbing a tree to hunt in. Plus, I've never seen deer in this kind of rain. I will be going Sunday morning, but not Saturday.

The worst thing about the rain in my opinion isn't getting wet, but how fast some heavy rain can destroy your blood trail.

A sprinkle is no big deal but I wouldn't hunt if it was a moderate to heavy rain or snow because deer will often tend to hole up when the weather is nasty, especially if there is some wind with the precipitation. In those types of storms right after the rain or snow breaks is the time to hit the stand because the deer will be on the move to fill their belly after laying low for a while.

The exception would be if the bucks are in chase or breeding mode and then it could very well be worth it to tuff it out and get cold and soaked to the bone.

I hunt right through all of it. We generally dont get lightning at that time of year, but if we did, Id just get in my ground blind. I also hunt right through heavy snows. You know how many times Ive had deer walk out just after the weather breaks?

Just after a nasty storm is an awesome time to be out there. But i have to admit. If your not in some kind of shelter its hard to find the self discipline to stick it out.

I'll hunt through the snow anyday, but heavy rain like we've been having here just isn't worth it. I don't have a ground blind, and couldn't use one where I hunt (on a hill side). I will be out there if it's just a drizzle, but Sunday morning looks good for sure.

Gore-tex or dry plus works really well . Plus the deer move well in the rain if it is not a really heavy rain. :D

My problem with hunting in the rain is that one not so good shot and you will lose the deer. I don't think that is fair to the deer really. Plus your freezer will be mad at you to. It is just hard to follow a blood trail in the rain.

Well, I was able to hunt both yesterday and today, but as I expected, I didn't see anything. Saturday was very foggy and had a light drizzle/mist. Today was just the rain falling from the leaves but making too much noise so I suppose the deer didn't move since the rain was a bit noisy. Hope to see more once it gets a little colder out.

I was checking my food plots Saturday in wedowee, and one hell of a strom came through. I dont know where your at in Georgia, or if that storm came your way, but after that storm came through the fog was so thick we drove 15 miles past our turn before we even knew we had passed it.

I'm in Cincinnati Ohio, no where near Georgia.

Haha, it's alright. Our does are average, whatever that may be I don't know. I'd say most does I see people get are anywhere from 80-120 lbs. I've never had a doe come close enough to kill one, every deer I've killed has been a buck. I guess I can't complain about it but I'd actually love to get a doe and give more competition for the bucks on the land I hunt. I've been hunting for about 16-17 years but have only killed 3 deer. For the first 12 years that I hunted, it was in Pennsylvania for rifle season only and in the area that I hunt there, the game commission is screwing non-resident hunters. I have since got back into bow hunting and hunt in my home state for the entire season as well as hunting in PA for rifle, so I have extended my hunting and it has proven itself. My first deer was in 2005 and I got 2 last year. So all of my deer have been within the past 3 years.

Well I remember when I was about 16 or so and rifle hunting in PA, we used to have deer running rampant. It used to be normal to see 30-40 deer on opening day alone. Now, I only see 2 or 3 out of the 3 days I hunt there - poor management by the PA Game Commission. Now since I am back into bowhunting and hunt in Ohio, I see a lot more and I get to hunt a lot more. Last year I saw about 15-20 deer total and was lucky to get the 2 that I did, most were 100 yards away in the open woods. Now, two years ago, I think I probably saw at least 30-40 deer throughout bow season. But still, for the life of me, cannot figure out why I can't get a doe close enough to shoot...it's so weird, who would have thought that only bucks come close enough for me to shoot...?? :?:

Thats about what i see. Maybe two or three deer if i see any each time i hit the woods. Accept at my uncles place. Hes got 170 acres surrounded by hunting clubs fenced off and marked. There so many does there it aint funny. I'll see up to ten at a time in a 50 yard by 20 food plot. All he shoots is bucks.

Hunted all weekend and only saw a 1.5 year old spike on Saturday morning. He was broadside for 20 minutes or so and I got to watch him eat and work a rub. Then he walked up the hill which I thought would lead him to my buddy's stand who has yet to kill his first ever deer, but unfortunately the spike wrapped around the hillside and ended up behind me. He ate the foilage and walked around for another 25 minutes within shooting range and then bedded down. If I don't get the chance to get a nice buck this year, I will really regret not shooting the spike that gave me all the time in the world. Nevertheless, I patiently waited until my buddy came towards my stand when it was time to head home and motioned that there was a spike bedded down. While I was still in the stand and able to see the deer, I had him go over and cut up to where the deer bedded down, without him being able to see it. I thought I was going to get to watch him kill his first deer, but once he was within 10 yards and walking up the hill towards the deer, he jumped it and the deer ran off. My buddy never got to see it but I watched the whole thing from above in the tree stand. We have coyotes running rampant and possibly spooking the deer; had one at about 35 yards but it was moving - would have smoked him if he had stopped. Squirrels and chipmunks still annoying as all heck with all the racket they make.
