Tampons

Postby Bushie Jackman » Tue Aug 12, 2008 8:36 am

Yeah Yeah Yeah....if you don't wanna read it, hit your back button

When I lived in my apartment many moons ago, I pulled up in the parking lot and started to walk toward the main entrance of the building when I saw my neighbor ( my hunting mentor), who taught me everything about hunting in general) pouring estrous doe urine into a zip lock baggy, and inside of that baggy were several tampons. Know being the inquisitive guy that i am, I questioned not only the technique, but said to him "What in the F_ _ _ are you doing" He replied to me and said "Bushie", the rut is on you see, and tampons are great scent wicks. They are also scent free and sterile and come in their own scent free package, they absorb and hold the doe urine extremely well and they also have a string in which to hang them from a tree or tie them to your boots and drag them behind you for a scent line"
Well my DEERHUNTINGCHAT.COM friends....I thought to myself, this guy's has a great mind for new hunting inventions, who else could or would think of using tampons to attract a big buck. I smiled and said "Great idea Bud"
I never utilized his idea, but anyone on this site who wishes to try it, please feel free to do so.
Oh, and by the way, he came home with a huge ten pointer from Somerset County Maryland that weekend. Who da thunk?

Also works as a good joke when your hunting buddy is miffed about missing that big buck.

I have heard of that before, but never used it. It not only makes sense but sounds like a great idea. If i use that technique with success, I will dedicate my buck to Tampax...

They do work, problem is you can't leave them out or they will absorb the moisture from the air as well and dilute your scents.
Got a couple quick pop shots off...

Tampons for scent wicks, sounds like a good idea. Over in Iraq we kept a case sanitary napkins in every truck to wrap up wounds, when the word got back home on what we were doing with them, people started sending them to us. It wouldn't be a bad idea to put a couple in your emergency first aid kit.

I have heard of this "technique" before.... the idea is pretty interesting...donno if I would try it. I did however hunt with a guy that put cotton balls in a film canister and poured the scent in it then would put them in trees where the wind would carry the scent. And then just pick them up when he was done and use it again the next day. He told me that he once had a small buck circle the tree looking for the source. The funny thing is with all the products on the market and tricks and techniques we have at our disposal. I sometimes question how effective they are. Personally I think if you shoot a deer early in the season and then use the tarsal gland from that deer...that can the purest form of scent you can have. Plus the other deer in the area know the scent of that deer and are familiar with it.

That is one of my favorite tricks i use, i have also used the film cannister trick, nowadays i use the cotton scent wicks that have a hole in them to hang on a limb. They are easy to find and pick up when needed.

Well I wasnt gonna post this but...about 10 years ago there was a group of out of staters over in Pike county that used umm, "soiled" tampons, I swear! They hunted the farm beside us and had them stuck to the sides of trees, claimed they drew bucks like mad? I never could bring myself to try this but think about this, authorities do warn women that are cycling(no not on a Schwinn!) to be careful in area's where there have been wild animal attacks. I seen the "articles in question" on the sides of the trees and about died! Ok as far as a scentholder they would be good I bet.

Man, that beats the heck out of those scent drags on a rope. After your hunt that thing stinks like deer conchie, and u gota put up with it if u wanna reuse it. But these tampons, u could just throw away.
