tighter groups

Postby DocHolladay » Sun Feb 06, 2005 7:53 pm

i went today(2-6-05) and tried a new .270 ammunition. i was using winchester super x 130gr. i tried hornady 140gr. ballistic tip. man what a difference. the winchester was all around the bull 2- 2.5in. group, not tight or consistant. the hornady gave me about a 1-1.25in. group, thats half, and its consistant. i think if i do some more work to the rifle i could get it tighter. might make a difference for someone else, maybe not. ya'll may already have a preferred ammo. i thought i had it good with the 130gr., but read an article on the .270 that made me think about it. so far im close to what the article talked about, hopefully i will get close to the results thay had. hope this helps even if you dont use hornady.

Hey Doc -- you did the right thing. I've got a rifle that does just the opposite. It'll scatter Hornady shells all over the place, but it'll put Winchester ammo in under an inch at 100 yds every time. Rifles are just like people, they have their preferences and it's important to shoot several flavors to figure out which one your gun likes best. :D

I've noticed the same thing about switching ammo that some shoot better out of diff. guns. I think that probably most of the reason that you were shooting so much better w/ the hornaday was probably because of the ballistic tip. I have a 17HMR and was getting a little irregularity in my groups with hollow points and switched to ballistic tipped shells and it was a night and day difference so i've been going to try them in my 30-06 but for the larger caliber shells they are pretty expensive.
