I currently use a .54 caliber TC New Englander rifle. I would like to try a cleaner powder than pyrodex and am trying to find info on American Pioneer Powder. I would also like to know opinions on tripple 7 powder. and do I need to change my caps. I was told at the local gun store if I used triple 7 I would need to use a musket cap or shotgun primer to get it to fire reliably. Is this true? thanks for any input.

That's what I've heard...but...my neighbor shoots triple 7 and I haven't seen any problems thru his using #11 caps. Guess you'll just have to give it a whirl and see. Another replica powder you might try...Goex Pinnacle. http://www.goexpowder.com/
You shouldnt have to change nipples, unless you just want to use a shotgun primer.Goex is a good powder from what I have heard.I have personally never used it,but you may like it.Good luck.
Havent used the Pioneer but I switched to Triple 7 pellets a couple years ago in an older TC Thunderhawk. I use CCI magnum #11 caps with no problem.
I put a musket nipple on an old CVA Hawken that I use loose pyrodex in. No problems with that either.
