to use a release or not

A bow hunting forum for all kinds of hunting with a bow.

to use a release or not

Postby moto » Mon Jan 18, 2010 7:10 pm

So currently I am shooting with using my fingers and don't mind it. I have been doing some reading and seems like most people use a release of some kind.

Curious of others opinions.

What kinds do you use?
Do you put a loop on your string or not?

New to the sport and enjoying it.

I used to shoot fingers for a long time but that was back when releases were outlawed in the state I was hunting. I now only shoot with a release and will never shoot fingers again unless I am shooting a recurve or long bow. Releases take a lot of the human erroro factor out of the equation and ensure you are not plucking the string. I have used all sorts and brands and the one I like the best is made by Scott Archery and it's called the Shark. It's a double caliper and very smooth. It's adjustable for length and also for the trigger pull. I also use a string loop.

I use a finger tab (bear fur). I can't stand releases, they are way too sensative. Even for my firearms, I like a stronger trigger pull (I'm weird apparently, most people like the opposite).

I have used a release for so long I can't remember when I started, has to be at least 15 years. I still use the same release a TM hunter, don't even know if they still sell them. Couldn't shoot without it.
If your to busy to go hunting your just too busy.

I've never shot with fingers. I use a Flecther arrow release that is right on the string.

I shoot my bow using a cobra release. my kobra is not real sensitive. its almost like pulling the trigger to my rifle.

With a compound bow I would most definately recommend a release.

I was the last holdout from my group to switch to a release. The first time I tried it, the bow fell out of my hands 3 out of the 5 shots I took. It wasn't till two years later I tried it again. It will make you a better shot. Then combine it with a drop away rest and I went from a 30 yard max to a 50 yard max. I use a loop and I've had a few releases.

The loop will give you a tad longer draw, not much, but a release will keep the string straight, and for me its easier for me to find my anchor point every time. But thats just me,may be different for folks.Plus the loop will save the serving on your string cause the jaws of the release are on the loop and not on the bowstring.
