Turkey?

Postby oldgun » Fri May 18, 2007 10:53 am

Up here in ThunderBay Ontario Wild Turkeys are starting to be seen!!! I belive they should be protected, but as of now our, mnr. says they are not here so there is no law against shooting them. I belive this is wrong what are your thoughts???? I will not shoot one, I want to leave them alone, let them get a chance to populate. What do you think?? :?:

I have heard they are also seeing turkeys in the Adirondack Mountains and farther north which is your area. I think they need to let them popluate and have some good management tools in place to let them expand. Winters are pretty tough up there, it will be interesting to see it they can withstand the harsh winters. They need to be protected for a while to see it they will survive.

I say protect them for a while. If they are all shot, how will they make a come back??? Preservation is the key to repopulation. Once they have a good population, limits are the key to keeping them there.

When turkey first came on my place about 12 years ago,,,i waited 2 or 3 years just to get some to stay in the area. Now there are usually 75-100 that i know of that use my place, though i dont know where they are right now due to dogs! Here in Mo. if the laws do not say that you can hunt them you have to assume you cannot. But yes they should be protected for awhile,,,and yes they do reproduce faster than rabbits! Turkey hunting is my favorite hunt with deer a close 2nd. Nothing like hearing Gobbles coming at you on a warm spring day.

If you have turkeys, chances are you have more than you are seeing. If you have a couple good nesting years up there. The population will grow rapidly.Even if you dont have laws against shooting them.Or you don't have a season in place to hunt them. I wouldn't shoot them any way. Our DEC has denied things here in n.y. also.So no big surprise. Your choice whether to shoot them or not shoot them I guess.

Deer season is over,,,time to get ready for spring hunts! I cant wait to find my birds. We get some more snow on the ground i am going to go scout some more and put my trail cam out on them. One of my favorite ways to go after them is to stalk them,,,it adds an entirely new level of difficulty to an already difficult sport. When i stalk i average about 1 bird for every 4 attempts. Before the dogs came in the picture, i knew all the roost spots ,the feeding spots were trickiest. With fields on the East and West sides of my place, plus tons of oak, you never know when they are going to be where. I LOVE the challenge. BTW,,,i ONLY stalk them on my farm. Tukey hunting can be very dangerous, particularly on public ground. Always obey the rules of gun safety and avoid giving the sport a bad rap.
