turkey decoy

I just recently purchased a turkey decoy. It is a jake doing it with a hen. I don't know how i would use this. Do i call? Or do i just let the decoy work its magic?

Turkeys just like deer and other animals have a heiarchy or 'pecking order' and that type of decoy setup is intended to infuriate an older Tom that hears a hen yelping , etc calling to be bred.

When he gets into eyesight and see's a jake (teenager) breeding a hen he should come running in to attack the jake and you then need to be quiet and get ready to shoot.

If you don't shoot its possible the Tom may go to tearing up the decoy set by jumping on the decoy and spurring, pecking, etc.

Remember not to OVERCALL. Alot of scouting is a certain plus, if you are in an area they frequent, minimal calling is best most of the time. If you go out and scout them the evening before and watch where they go to roost, you can get close in the morning.

Another thing I might point out is that that decoy will only be good for spring turkey hunting when they are breeding, some states allow fall turkey hunting but there's no breeding in the fall so it won't be likely to work then.

A single hen decoy can be very effective if you bust up a flock and attempt to re-call them.

Using decoys in combination with calling will add realism. If you can work them with in eyesight of the decoys. Can mean a dead bird. Good luck! Hope ya smack one.

If the decoys are in eyesight, they can also cover up small movements,,,,,,just dont get carried away.
