turkeys from a pop-up blind? decoys?

Postby nyhunter24 » Sun Dec 27, 2009 9:53 pm

i just got a new pop-up ground blind for christmas and was thinking about getting turkey decoys for hunting out of it. what pair/ setup should they be in? (jake, hen, and tom decoys all together? or how should i be?). i heard that even if nothing responds to your calling, if they see the decoys they will naturally come in to check them out, is this true?

i will be hunting with a gun and a bow for them. Thanks

It really depends on the tom that sees the dekes. I have used just hens, hens and a jake, hens and a tom, hens a jake and a tom.... It really depends on the tom. Jakes are bullies and will come in and attack a tom in groups to get a hen. The last set up I used was one hen and one tom. Worked good a couple of times and then they quit coming to it and I had to add a hen and lose the tom.

The key is if the turkeys have been hunted alot. If they have, they will remember and not come in. You will have to change things up to get them interested again. Hen decoys work 99% of the time, so I always have them. I wil say that the earlier in the season, the better decoys work. By the time the turkeys have been hunted alot, they dont want to see another "turkey" that isnt moving, they want the real thing. Of course, some turkeys are just plain stupid and will come into one every single time.

My experience with fall turkeys with decoys didn't work so well. I think the turkeys could sense something wrong and when I took the decoys out of the corn field, they came in. Now just for the record I was using a cheap plastic decoy so that might have been the problem.
