Turnip question

Postby boondocker » Fri Nov 28, 2008 12:20 am

Hey we have been planting turnips in northern Minnesota for about 5 years now and usually plant around mid july to august 1st. First couple years they turned out great and we had deer everywhere. Last few years have been dry and not much production.
If I plant them in June and they mature around late August will they be all right until the deer start hitting them after a hard frost? usually in mid sept. have heard of some people planting them in late may but won't the turnip rot in the ground if they mature and then sit in the ground?

yu can try mowing them off, not too short tho.they will send up new foliage thats more tender and may slow down matureing of the root.ive had some growing here in mo since first of august and the root shows no sign of rot, in fact ive been pulling a few and eatin them all fall and winter.yu obviouslyhave different soil and moisture conditions where yu are so it would be hard to say.id plant some brassica and other stuff with them so all your eggs aint in one basket if yu know what i mean.
