waist?

1st year hunting and was wondering, what do you (hunters) do with the waist of the animal after you have processed the deer and removed all the meat? Do you discard the bones in the woods?

Yes, I gut it near the kill site. Then we take the rest and hang it in the barn to be skinned. The skin goes to a "hats for Hides" program. Other waste such as lower legs and head is returned to the woods for the coyotes and the bugs.

We butcher our own. Heart and liver are once again being saved by us. If my aunt wants the kidneys we save them too. We field dress "in the field" and leave the offal there. Hide is given away usually to some friends that tan if we dont want it. All usable glands, urine etc are stripped from the carcass for our use. Lower legs are turned into gun racks/hat racks etc. Sinew and scrotums go to a guy in Texas that makes crafts from them. Any scrap in the butcher shop goes out for wildlife feed, yote bait piles, trapping bait. I took one deer in my life to a processor. Never again. Theres nothing to doing your own. Noone believes how many we butcher in a year between our deer camps and for friends. Season opened Friday and we've done 3 for our camp and 6 others for friends that even if they could afford processing fees prefer to do it themselves with us.

depends on the region you are in. some use it as baits, and some take it to the butcher.

Good luck
