Wally world Throw and Grow... is growing!!!

Postby joshheat25 » Mon Sep 14, 2009 9:11 pm

I bought the bag of "Throw and Grow" at wal mart a few weeks back and decided to give it a try. I went out into the woods and used a rake to clear the leaves off of the top of the ground. Picked a few areas that get some sunlight. scraped up the soil alot! and threw seed down mixed it around into the loose soil. It was raining while I was doing this and it rained alot on Friday two days after I planted. Went out and checked on it today and there was 1/2 inch green sprouts all over the areas. so that was 5 days. I also planted millet. Brown top and dove proso. and they haven't done anything much yet. I'll post up some pictures later in the week.

BTW there was deer tracks in the plots and looks like they were digging in one spot??

Congratulations, it sounds like they found the plot pretty quickly.

Some plot mix companies suggest keeping deer out of a new plot until it gets well established (about ankle high and fairly thick), and if you do a google search you can find kits for putting up around your plot.

So if you have some time before you start deer hunting that might be something to consider.

Nice! I hope my wally throw and grow comes in that well, I haven't checked on it yet. Also i like that stand. It looks like a real sturdy structure. Although i think i would have put it a little higher if it had been me building it, and some camo netting would look sweet.

Thanx I appreciate it. It's a solid stand. I went a little overkill on the size and the support but I'd rather be safe then sorry. As far as the design of the stand. I wanted some room up there so... I was thinking about putting up a 2' high blind around to help block but i haven't got that far yet! I put 2 coats of thompsons water seal on the top of the plywood, I still need to do underneath on the plywood. yea it's like 15 feet to the platform. Reason I didn't build it higher was because all I had were 2x6x14' to make the ladder. I got all the 2x6 material for free!!! it was 10 of those 2x6x14'. alot of money! All the screws and lags were from doing jobs and collecting over the years.. so it didn't work out bad.

It's Huge!

Might have to be carefull in the future when moving around as the wood may start making creaking a popping noises and you are definitely right in that you want to camo net it.

Thanx guys I appreciate it, I was out there tonight, I saw 12 or so different deer. They were hanging around eating bushes and the grass/clover I planted, and then progressed to the feeders which are about 25 yds away. they were very skittish at the feeders untill later in the night. The grass/clover plots are 10 yds away. No bucks all doe and smaller deer. I was going to take a large doe at the end of the night but it was late and tough to see. also there were too many deer spread out around me, lol I was afraid to move too much. I am going to take you guys advice and buy some sort of camo blind.

AlabamaHunter as far as plans go well I looked around online for pics of other peoples stands. Most were very small one person. Not very safe. Or they spaned across 2 trees. I wanted my stand specifically on this one tree. So I started thinking of how to support off of the tree. So i decided to use a little bit of my Engineering degree, and my experience in construction and started drawing on paper ideas and it progressed to the six sided platform that it is now.

If you want details on how I built it I can pm you them or if other people want to hear about how, I can just post them up here.

Neat stand. That wally's throw and grow does good here. Its also cheaper at wallys by $5 a bag then our feed/farm and home stores etc. Another thing we plant and it grows like mad is wheat, deer love it and it stays green here till late January anyhow. We use the premium seed in the better prepared spots or better areas and fill in the gaps with wheat. We keep trailcams running on some and the trails leading to and from. Turkeys and quail use them too. Fox, yotes etc hunt thru them also.

Yea Next year i'll buy it from wal mart again. it was alot more expensive from southern states. Also so you say you plant wheat. What time of year do you plant that?

I was raised on a farm and for winter wheat when to plant depends on where you live, especially up in northern states wheat should likely already be planted, you could plant right now in the middle states and the south.

Even if it is cool where you are it will germinate, wheat will very slowly come up as you get a warm day here or there providing the soil is moist.

What you don't want to do with wheat is plant it way too early because if it grows to where the first joint or knuckle of the stem of the plant appears then the plant is easily burned or killed by hard frost and freezing, if they stay short they will stay green even in bitter weather and deer will go after them.

I've hunted whitetails on green winter wheat fields even in the January doe only season here in Kansas and the deer will hit those fields almost daily, the problem I had occasionaly was that if there are several wheat fields you don't know which one they will hit on a given day.

Wheat should only be planted about 1" deep and don't overcrowd so scatter the seed out if you don't use a seed drill.

You can save a few bucks and buy the $10 camo burlap at wallys too. Brown burlap onion or potato sacks will work too. We're in West Central Illinois and we plant our wheat plots around Sep 1st, sometimes as late as the 15th. Ours is all up and the deer are keeping it trimmed back to about 3"-5". We've got a few wheeled handspreaders, we go over it once with the 4wheeler and a chunk of hurricane fence weighted with limbs we pick up in the timber. Never measured it but I'd say its 1 inch or less in depth after that. Wheat seed we get at Bucheits $8.99/50lbs this year. We palnted 8 bags of it if I remember right and 200lbs or so of premium seed ie:throw and grow, hotplot etc. This farm is only 90 acres with about 45 acres of timber and we plant in the timber only as the farmer plants the fields. Our plots vary but most are 20'-50' wide and 50'-100' long. The farmer keeps a lane mowed thru the timber and we plant it in spots, 15' wide? x 1/8 mile is the lane. Be careful with your wood stand, in a few years, screws may pull out or wood rot etc. It looks great but safety first, noone wants to hunt out of a wheelchair.

Thanx for the tips guys! I actually bought three $10 camo Burlaps from walmart and ran some 2X2 posts at 30 inches high all the way around my stand. so I'll have a little more freedom of movement so I don't spook the deer while I'm moving around. I think that will help out some. Next year I am going to plant alot of millet, I'll try Wheat, and probobly use more throw and grow. But the soil obvioiusly is pretty good back there.
