Wanted Axis Deer antlers

Postby Dario » Thu Jan 12, 2006 5:08 pm

Hi,

I hope I won't be booted out for this...but I am a penturner and would love to get my hands on axis deer antlers. I cannot use old weathered/rotten pieces...but fresh fall-offs are okay

Anything bigger than 3/4" diameter and lengths more than 2-1/2" is usable. Preffered is 3/4"+ dia x 5-1/2" long.

If seller can cut and ship via USPS flat rate box...it will be ideal.

Please let me know if you are interested...post here or email me for asking price. I can also do a trade for pen made out of wood or antler if you want.

I am also open to suggestions for other (ivory like) materials that maybe turned to pens.

Thank you,
Dario :)

I don't see that it will be a problem.

So, I have no idea what you are talking about. Can you tell me a little more about what you are making!

Here are sample pics of what I make...picture this replacing the wood with antler :)

These are made with Amboyna burl and figured mesquite.

Those are nice. I would like to see some made of antlers, that would be nice.

I don't see a problem looking for antlers from people here, just don't advertise them for sale unless you go thru administration!

Thanks for asking and enjoy the forum.

Hi folks,
I've got a friend who trades me beautiful pens for antlers. His are made on a cross pen body. They stand up to abuse and look fantastic. Plus I carry part of my kill during the week. Its like a touch stone to the woods.

Do they write as good as they look? Beautiful work by the way.

Yes, They do write as good as they look :)

The secret in most if not all pens is the refill. I only use German made (Schmidt) refill on mine. Ofcourse the kits come with a regular refill and I do use those too but I make sure to include extra refill.

The more expensive kits do use Schmidt refills to begin with. Pen kits vary from $1.00 to $100.00+ depending on style and finish. I almost always use Titanium Gold, Platinum and plain Chrome finish since these stand to wear the best.

The cross style pen is probably the cheapest kit around but also the most versatile in terms of modification. I stopped using it because I don't like the refill.

I haven't used antler on my pens yet...but seen a lot of my colleagues use it. Some are pure white like ivory...others integrate and let part of the natural edge show (just like in some knife handles). I learned from them that Axis deer is the best choice since it has the least marrw like core and most are solid white except for a vein core which I will drill out anyway.

I can play with the shape of the pen (within bounds) and customize it too.

Thank you :)
