Wetlands for White-tailed Deer

Postby tombiebighauser » Wed Jan 04, 2012 6:49 pm

A number of deer hunters across the East are building small wetlands to improve habitat for white-tailed deer. The water in these wetlands can be very important to does when they are lactating. Individuals on the Cumberland Plateau and across Appalachia are constructing wetlands on dry mountain ridges to help deer avoid conflicts with humans and dogs in the valleys. The aquatic plants that grow in and around these wetlands are sought after by deer for food. These plants contain high amounts of sodium, serving as natural salt blocks.

Hunters are quick to observe and tell others about the amazing response of white-tailed deer and other wildlife species to small wetland projects. While a foot plot requires an annual input of time and money, one can build a wetland for less than $900 that will require little, if any maintenance.

You’ll see how individuals like you are building wetlands at schools, visitor centers, in fields and forests across North America.
