i personally am a remington man. model 700. great out of box accuracy, plenty of after market products, and you can pay to have some extra work done to make it even better. id get the barrel floated, if it isnt already. on my model 700, i can pull the stock off and adjust the trigger. you may not feel comfortable doing it, and want a gunsmith to do it. its up to you. thats my opinion. http://www.remington.com. model 700 sps or xcr.

deer rifle

Postby pgsgunner » Mon Jan 10, 2005 6:37 am

Hey i just have to stick y two cents worth in on this
Well here goes,, im not sure if Weatherby even makes the gun you want yet,, but i bought a 7mag from walmart 3 years ago,, Weatherby Vangaurd,, and ill tell u it will at 200 yrds shoot groups of 3 shots that touch each other,, and it will do it evertime,,,
I f i ever feel the need for a nother gun it will be a Weatherby,, Bought from Walmart it wont coast u anymore than remington or any of the rest except maybe a savage which is a damd good gun to straight out of the box,,, Hey i shoot a rem 30/06 and i have for years but for consitant shooting it wont touch the Vangaurd,, an neither will the browning 270 i shoot.. my rem 243 cant compete either not for consitant 200yrs shots. none are as good as the Vangaurd by Weatherby

All of the major manufacturers make quaility guns, but I'm partial to Winchesters --- I've had a Mod 70 .30-06 for over 20 years and it's never failed me, and routinely shoots more accurately than I can. Got a M70 .300WSM 3 years ago and within 100 rounds, it was shooting into less than an inch at 100 yds. I've got buddies who shoot Browning, Remington, etc. and most every one of them is pleased with what they shoot. Find one that fits you, and you'll shoot better, regardless of the brand.

i agree with T-bird. what you need to do is go and make the sales person hand you each rifle and you hold it, aim it, see how it feels(does it feel natural?). think about toting it around all day(is it to heavy to stalk with?), distance you are going to shoot, terrain you are shooting in, etc. think about every instance you have ever had hunting, then imagine doing it with that rifle. you also have to consider kick, is it going to make you flinch everytime you shoot and throw your shot off? does the ammo cost an arm and a leg to buy? you kinda get the picture. hope that helps. by the way weatherby makes a helluva rifle.

Another thing you might want to consider...
What type of weather do you hunt in? If you are like me and hunt in ANY conditions a stainless rifle with a synthetic stock might be the way to go.

good point. my .270 rem. has a synth. stock and some kinda black coating on the barrel. wood is ok but you have to clean it and oil the barrel as soon as you get home. i.e. take care of it. but wood makes it heavy.

get the savage with the laminate stock and the accutrigger and you will be money ahead, and probably have just as accurte rifle as any other you can find.

what brand of rifle

Postby bambeklr » Sat Jun 11, 2005 10:45 pm

I like remingtons alot. I also purchased a browning A-bolt a few years ago and I have fallen inlove with it. My model has the boss system on it wich makes it uncomfortably loud but its killing capability is great in 7mm mag.

I'm with you, Quigs ---- I just love a blue barrel and walnut stock. My M70 30.06 is 25 years old, and the stock Monte Carlo style, is actually a light honey color, and the checkering is worn in just the right places. A few knicks and dings just add character. It's like an old friend. :)

To me, I like both. I love the look of wood and especially the engravings and the monte carlo stock. However, those guns don't get drug around throught the thickets very often. That high gloss can also refract sun light. Some guns look better and some or more practical. I can say that I have never cracked a stck on a fiberglass rifle, yet.

I've never met a deer I killed that told me how ugly my rifle was. :D I save the pretty ones for the range and on nice days.

They don't bruise to badly when they die of laughter. :D With that old sharps rifle they'll die of cancer from the second hand smoke. :D

what rifle

Postby bill » Wed Jun 29, 2005 8:50 pm

a sane person cannot be happy with just one rifle, why, how could one live with himself just having one? lets see, what do I have to grab onto. a sako finnbear .243. a winchester 70 classic stainless .300wm, a browning a bolt medallion .270win. a marlin guide gun .45/70, a winchester 70 in .338win, and a weatherby mark v stainless in .257 wm. wait, i forgot a winchester 94 in .30/30, a ruger 77 stainless in .25/06. i just hope i dont get out in the boondocks with rifle of one caliber and ammo of another........

what brand rifle

Postby bambeklr » Wed Jul 20, 2005 9:19 pm

I absolutly fell in love with my browning A-bolt. It is just bad to the bone. I have a 7mm mag with the boss system all stainless and black synthetic stock. I put a 6.5x20x50 leupold on it. The gun is hell on a whitetail just a little loud. This is because of the boss sytem. But the boss sytem can be adjusted to make almost any ammo shoot out of the gun. Just adjust her according to the key given to you with purchasing. Just dont forget your ear plugs. TRUST ME!!! remember the EAR PLUGS!!!!!

Hey nd123 --- for around $300, the new Weaver Grand Slam scopes are hard to beat. I put one on my .300 WSM a few years ago (3x9x40)and I love it. It's bright, clear, and hasn't shifted point of aim since I screwed it on. I've got Leupold bases and rings, and she's tight as a drum. :D
