What caliber do you use and why?

Postby aussiejo » Thu Mar 23, 2006 2:45 am

Hey guys, just interested in what you use and why?

i have a few different rifles, but the two calibers i wouldnt part with would have to be my .223 Rem and .308 Win,

you can get ammo pretty much anywhere, and as long as they are standard NATO calibars, ammo commercial ammo will be pretty cheap, and should anything nasty happen, you know you can always get ammo, if you have to.....

I have shot a lot of stuff with them, i cant say that the same animals were "30 % deader" with anything bigger, although i would say that sometimes there are shots i either pass up, or have to really concentrate on to have them come off ok, but is that a bad thing?

Im pretty sure anyone in the 1750s would have given thier eye teeth to have a five shot bolt action witha scope!

What are your ideas about you fav calibers????

Hi Aussiejo!
My favorite rifle is a Savage 30-06. I can use it for just about anything there is to hunt around here. In Kansas a .223 isn't legal. And to be honest I'm in the bigger is better school. (I used to bunny hunt with a 10 guage. One shot kills and cleans all at once.)
My wife uses a WWII 8 mm mauser. I sawed about a foot off it and cropped its stock, but it is still a heavy gun. It has very little kick for such a large caliber and I think that is why she likes it. If she ever gets on this site and finds out about .243 and .270 she'll probably want a new gun.
This last year one of the people I took hunting shot a buck with a .243 at 50 yards and the deer got away. It was probably a poorly placed shot, but I'll bet my 30-06 would have left a better blood trail.

My favorite is the .270 Win.. I also have a .30-30 Win. that I have had since I was 11. Both are great calibers have have killed plenty of game.

I will be getting the .325WSM later on this year. :D :D :D

My all time favorite would have to be a .270. I have hunted with one for close to twenty years now and I can say that I never lost a deer to a well placed shot. Granted, just about any high powered centerfire can claim that as well. But I have also downed some deer on not so good shots with it also. The .270 is flat shooting, hard hitting and easy on the shoulder. I have hunted and owned lots of calibers, but the .270 is my favorite.

I'm not against all cats, just the ones within rifle range. :D That's a joke for anyone out there who may have thought otherwise.

I love my .300 WSM, great knockdown power, pretty good trajectory, and that THWACK, when you hit something, its reassuring, although it leaves a pretty big hole in a deer.

Depends on the stand location, but my favorites are .284 Win , 7MM-08, and 270 Win. Looking for a 260 Rem though.

Hey fellas i use a Remington 700 model, 7mm magnum STW. I have lapped the barrel, cryo treated, bolt and barrel squared up. It has a hogue stock aluminum bedded and glassed in. Trigger has been lightened. The scope i use is a vari x three tactical by leupold. This gun is a killer i went hunting in south carolina this week and shot one at 350 yds.

PS
If you guys need a place to squirrel hunt with them 270s let me know.

I have used a .270 for about 35 years with no problems. Knocks em down and they don't get up. Great for watching a meadow for those longer shots. Shoots flat and still hits hard.

My first large caliber rifle was a 7mm 08 remington model seven, which i still use. There is no telling how many deer and hogs i have taken with it. It is a very fun gun to shoot, very accurate, and great for young hunters. I also have 7mm Mag. This is a great caliber. It has tremendous knock down power and is not bad at all to shoot. Daddy loves anything that is in the 7mm caliber and just got a 7mm Ultra Mag. I also just got a Browning A-bolt stainless stalker in 325 WSM, and killed a massive hog with it the other night. I am extremely impressed even though it is a little much for deer it gets the job done. We also have a couple of 30-06's between us but the others are my favorites.

I have always loved the 270. win due to growing up using it and my old man hunting with it for years. I always planned on getting on in probally the Browning A-Bolt Medallion untill recently received a Mint Condition remington model 700 BDL in a 7mm Rem Mag from my uncle who retired from hunting.

I used all types of guns and calibers and I think it is more important on how well you place your shot and what type of bullet you are using. You don't need cannons to kill a whitetail deer, the deer of today are not any tougher then they were 200 years ago when hunters used flintlock rifles shooting round balls at 1500 fps. If there is any difference it would be the avg. hunters shooting ability is not as good as the hunters 200 years ago
I don't kill innocent animals, just the ones that look guilty.

LOL,,,270 here,,,love the light recoil for multiple shots on multiple targets, have toyed with other calibers over the last 30 years,,first rifle was a rem 700 chambered in the old -06. I also still have .308, have had 250 savage, 243, 7.62X39, 30-30 and probably others,,just not memorable ones. Each one had its own advantages and disadvantages,,but for ME,,the Ruger M77 in .270 is awesome for North Missouri whitetail with my hunting style and locations.

It depends on what i will be doing,
Normally, i hunt moose, caribou, and Black bear. I will hunt the whitetail but not with rifles, with shotguns.

For my big game, i hunting with a 7mm Rem Mag shooting 160 grain accubonds topped with a Tasco 3-9 powered scope and im looking into buying a new with Nikon 2.5-10 powerd with BDC recticle or a 3.5-10 Leupold.

Favorite rifles for whitetail here in Va. Brushy mountains ranges usually short to medium.
Rem. model 7 .308 Win 150gr
Custom Interarms Mark X 25-06 120gr Grand Slams
Custom 96 Swedish Mauser 6.5 x 55 120gr Ballistic Tips

of the three I.ve killed the most deer with the .308 always a reliable performer.
Im stuck on the 6.5 right now its a sweel little deer rifle light recoil and good performance.
the 25-06 works great even though its a little out of place in the thickets.
