What choke to use with Buckshot

Postby donnyt01 » Mon Nov 03, 2008 3:04 pm

I'm sure this will get some people upset, but let's hear everyone's opinion. I'm using extra full chokes on my Beretta ES-100 and my wife's Charles Daly (Junk) semi auto. I was told by the tech support guy at CD that I shouldn't use anthing tighter than IC for buckshot or risk bulging the barrel. Both guns shoot decent 18-24" groups at 25 yards using 3" Wichester Supreme Copper Plated 00 Buck.

When I started patterning, I tried Modified and reg. Full, but the patterns were significantly larger. I don't want to risk a kaboom, but with the relative low number of shots being fired in this configuration is it a risk?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Ok, first, why would you still be using buckshot? Slug technology, accuracy and effectiveness is so far past that of shot, it isnt even funny, youre giving up a bunch of range. Second, if the guys at CD are telling you not to do something, you may want to listen, they know their products better than anyone. Last, theres nothing wrong with a Daly, I shoot a 12ga semi-auto for skeet and clays myself, and its a great gun, havent had a problem with it yet.

Virginia Law prohibits slugs in many areas. I have two shotguns with fully rifled barrels and would much prefer to shoot sabot slugs, but it's just not an option.

As far as the CD people telling me that it's not a good combination, I agree and won't continue to shoot that gun with the extra full choke. I want to know if there are any concerns with shooting extra full with my Beretta, which is a much better gun.

Buckshot OK in Full and X-Full

You can use any size buckshot from #4B (.24) to Tri-Ball (.60) in chokes as tight as X-Full. In my experience extended chokes in Improved Modified and Full work best. However - you have to pattern your load to know for sure.
