Welcome to the DHC forum.

You can use any wt grain bullet you want but for a 300WSM on Whitetail and Mule deer I would personally go with 150 or 160 grain bullets, besides thinking about bullet weight for big game you also want to use good quality ammo like 'bonded core or partition' ammo where the lead core is bonded to the copper jacket so it will stay in one piece and mushroom and drive through the animal.

Use any cheaper price/low quality ammo on target shooting or coyotes and pigs.

I have a 7mm Rem Mag which is also a belted magnum like your 300WSM and I tried using 140 grain bullets and at close range they are going so fast they will tend to blow all the way through a Whitetail deer and blow a big nasty hole out the other side so on belted magnum rifles I would advise the 150-160 grain bullets that are a bit slower and seemed to me to be less likely to blow through deer if you take a shot at a deer under 100yds.

I would save the 160-180 grain bullets for use on Elk and Moose respectively and the 200 grain bullets for big bear, the bigger heavier grain bullets usually also mean more recoil.

Like I said you can shoot any bullet you want but this is the way I would tend to go.

Good Luck!

I would run 180gr for almost everything. The only way I would change is for big game and I would run a 200-220gr boolit.

I have a 300wsm.i sighted it in with 180's to go elk hunting a couple of years ago. When i did this i bought a good bit of ammo so i kept shooting for the deer.Boy do they do a number.Im about out of the 180s so ill probably switch to the 150s.I just thought that as much money that ammo is i would use up what i had before i switched.

Well if you run out any time soon. Please tell me how the 150grs treat a deer. I was thinking of getting a new gun in 30 .06, but I'm interested in 300wsm. Only thing is I'm worried it might be over kill for whitetails.

I live in a shot gun state so i dont use it a lot.I think if you keep to the right bullets like bowhunters said you shouldnt have much problem with the 150s.Nothing wrong with the 06 though.Especially if you are just shooting whitetails.I wouldnt be scared to use on an elk either if its all i had to use.The ammo on the 300wsm might be a little more$$ and i promise the recoil will be more.Either cal. is a good choice imo.
