You could ask 10 different folks what gun is best and probably hear close to 10 different answers. I'd look around for one that catches your eye and feels good to ya when you shoulder it. If it's gonna be your only rifle for awhile you might go the .243 route. Good varmint and deer round. If you don't reload, factory ammo is available everywhere.

I agree with Quigley, .243 would probably do the trick. I have hunted with 30/30 and 30-06 for years, but bought a new Savage .243 the other day. I will use this rifle for deer and coyotes alike. I am sighting in this coming sat.HH CG

Since you're talking about birds I like pump shotguns, they are versatile and you can get slug barrels for most of them if you want to go after a deer - depending upon whats legal in you're area anyway. I like the remington 870 series, reliable and relatively affordable with lots of accessory options. Just my two cents. I don't like autoloaders because I just find that I burn ammo and don't make accurate follow up shots.

Just my opinion!

what gun

for birds any shotgun is good keeping in mind you would want a pump or automatic for fast recycle , but you really dont want to spend a whole lot on a shotgun because they get pretty beat up. You should also get one that has a 3 1/2 or 3 inch chamber for goose hunting . a few that come to mind are remington 870, mossberg 835 and new england arms has a real good deal going on an well built entry shotgun. you will want to get fancy when you start buying rifles so save your money for them and go cheap on a shotgun.

According to the info you gave I think you should buy a nice 12ga double sidexside. They don't cost too much and you will enjoy touching off that extra barrell on a pheasant or a rabbit. This is a good all around gun to have no matter what you want to shoot. Then I would buy a .243 or a 25-06 for deer and varmint.

check out rossi, new england arms, H&R if you can deal with a single shot you'll be able to buy combo shotgun and rifle or black powder and have two guns for the price of any one rem. or o/u or side by side and I've hunted with some more experienced fellas out in the atlantic flyway that can bag a limit of ducks or geese and pheasant just as quick with a single shot as most people can with a pump or autoloader and use 1/3 the ammo. If senarios aren't just right 6 out of 10 follow up shots are just hail-marys any way

hey, ya the best weapons for bird hunting are the Remington 870 Wingmaster 12gauges. or if you wanted a semi-auto, get an 1100 or 11-87 (also remington). If you want a deer rifle, the reccommended calibers by me would be a .30-06, .280, .270, .260, 300WSM, .300 Win Mag or .308... all these rifles would be GREAT guns for deer. Good Luck with your purchase... definetly get a shotgun first because you can shoot all kinds of game with it. :D
