what is your longest shot??

A forum for the center fire fans

I dont care for long shots. Too many guys try it and cripple deer. Ive watched guys with quail guns and deer slugs start throwin lead at deer 400 yards away, better chance of winning the lottery. My .50 cal Penn/Kentucky sidelock shoots better then I can but 50-60yards is my limit. My satisfaction always comes from how close I can get to game before I harvest it. My 12ga deer shotgun will cleanly take deer past 100 yards with ease if I do my part but rarely do I even set up for that kind of shot. Successful long range shooting requires practice, lots of practice. Centerfire rifles are illegal for deer hunting here so that may sway my feelings too. I did kill a red fox with a longbow years ago at 55 yards.

My longest shot on a deer was in AL on a dead calm, clear and cold morning several years ago. Laser ranged it before the shot at 437 yards. I was using my Ruger M77 in .243 Win with 100 grain PSP bullet. Deer went about 35 yards after a fairly low hit that turned out to be a heart shot. Longest shot ever was on a coyote at about 780 yards. Same rifle, same load. Nice to be lucky sometimes. I routinely practice long shots with this gun and have a 16X trajectory scope on it. Both the above shots were made from a bench-type rest using a rock-steady bipod. I routinely shoot woodchucks at 250-350 yards with this weapon each spring.

How true. What do you think of these guys on TV making 800+ yard shots regularly on big game?

I think they need to join the armed forces and go to sniper school.

I never attended sniper school, but was part of an elite forced recon unit in 'Nam, back in 1970-71 (USMC '68-'71). That was hairy enough and I was lucky enough to survive it.

I saw these "TV guys" attempting an 800+ yard shot on TV last week, with a 10-12 mph crosswind, which to me, seemed risky, to say the least.

With my eyesight failing now (due to diabetes) I doubt I'd attempt any really long-range shots anymore.

Shot a deer on my uncle's large dairy farm in Wisconsin at 350 yards while the deer was jumping over one of my uncle's barbed wire fences. Have two witnesses to prove it. I used a Remington 700 BDL in 7mm Remington Magnum with a Leupold VX-3 3-9 power 50mm scope.

Glad to read everyone's stories, some great shots out there!

Where do you find hips to shoot?I hear they are hard to skin and taste terrible, like skeets.
