what is your longest shot??

Postby grizz » Tue Oct 26, 2004 2:25 pm

whats your longest shot on a deer and with what did you shoot it with;I shot a small buck at 270 yards with open iron sites (no scope) with a 30/40 kraig single shot and have an eyewitness to that fact.......ps not bragging just a fact. im interested in who shot what long shots and what they shot it with, i do tend to be more interested in open iron site shooting and would love to see some competition shooting in that catagory.

That was a nice shot grizz. I like them old cartridges myself. I've never had to shoot a deer over 200yds, most were way under that. Been wanting to take one way out there with the Sharps, as it's worked out though, they've always been close. Maybe this year.

about 300 yards open sites

Postby Dcolwill » Wed Oct 27, 2004 9:58 am

I shot 2 deer on 2 consecutive mornings from the same stand. I was in the Black Hills of SD posted so I could see down most of one side of a ridge. There was a trail on the ridge across from me that I could see about 100 feet of clearly.
While hunting with my 6 cousins and 2 brothers and a few uncles, I cleanly double lung shot a deer walking on the opposite ravine that all agreed was about a quarter mile. They told me it was a lucky shot and couldn't believe I would even attempt it.
Next morning another deer same trail, I'm on same stand, and make the same shot.
I was using a remington .270 model 760 pump with open sites. Of course from the stump I was sitting on I had a tree I could rest the gun against.
My bead covered the entire animal so I moved the site to the side and got my height correct and then carefully moved it back and squeezed the trigger gently.
I'm not that great a shot, but the thing I liked about the .270 with 130 grain bullets is sited in at 150 yards I'm 1/2 inch high at 50 and 2 inches low at 300 yards.
The bottom line is with open sites I can't hold steady enough to worry about 2 1/2 inches off and that means if I see it I aim right at it and pull the trigger. Never worry about the range at all.
My eyes focus forward like all predators so I know I was born to hunt.

I usually don't shoot all that far, but I have shot a deer at about 200 hundred yards. That's not anything special, but I still had alot of fun. I shoot all my deer with a Remington model 722 257 Roberts with 3-9 leupold scope. I love that gun, alot of people don't like them, but I do.

Took a nice whitetail on a dead run at about 185 yards with a Weatherby 30-378. I was actually hunting elk at the time, but the deer was too good to pass up and I had a tag that need filled.

185yards dead run :!:
I just went out and marked out 185 yards and then tried to follow an imaginary target running 45 miles an hour (average speed of whitetail)
with my rifle to experiance what that would be like.
That is one incredible shot :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:

I would love to be able to shoot like that--it must take alot of years of shooting experiance to know how to lead-off a deer and stay on with elevation.

Hats off to you deer sniper  :!: :D

I'll buy that removed but you must admit there was a little luck involved I wouldn't try that too often myself or i'm sure i'd be turning out to be a better tracker than a shooter just to ask have you ever read any pat Mcmannus, the story the miracle shot is a real funny story he talks about making an awesome shot when he was a kid and the friend that was with him witnessed the shot and went out and told all their friends so then all the friends convinced pat to try to repeat the exact shot and failed time and time again. you should try to get hold of that story you'd get a kick out of it. Or any pat Mcmannus story for that matter.

Shot one three weeks ago that was pretty far. I'd say about 200 yards and was not a big target. Dogs were on the arse of a small deer and headed right for a highway so i did my part and harvested it and saved some dogs i'm sure. I was the last hunter before a 1/2 mile thicket and the highway. It was a small button but he dropped like a rock. Shooting a 30-06 with ballistic silvertip winchester supreme and a simmons whitetail classic zeroed for 4 inches high at 100 yards(we hunt some extremely large cuts). Worked flawlessly for a gun i have only hunted with about 6 times and is 30 years old.

Hey grizz, it was not running when i pulled it off but was running before. Jumped out the cut and stood in the path. There was maybe 1.5-2.5 seconds of aquisition time to get the shot off. I don't like shooting at anything on the run cuz i have had bad results with it and will not shot at anything unless i have some sort of rest. Wounded a huge buck that somebody else claimed and have completely missed a fat doe in close on the run. Yeah i was happy to help the pups get picked up. Went yesterday morning with the club and had two does sniff the bumper of my truck while i was in the stand. They kept lookin behind where the chase was coming from so i thought buck was on the way but nothing. Wish they would have been fatties cuz they were easy shots for both of em. Thanks for the compliment but we have some snipers at my club that are confident up to 300 yards. We have a 500 yard range at the club.

1200 yard shot...........................................*

Postby grizz » Thu Nov 04, 2004 8:59 am

heres a good one for you guy's , i was reading in some deerhunt forum where this guy said he nailed a buck with his 50cal inline black powder at 1200 yards. Isn't that a hoot, the deer would have been about the size of a fly on a pile of dung at 25 yards.............me thinks someone speaketh with forked tung! [/b]

I'd like to read that. Could you post the thread and forum? I'd find it hard to believe that he's shot enough rounds through that rifle to know his elevation settings at that range. Let alone the wind coming into play. I've seen deer stand out pretty good at 800-900yds, but that was on a open sand bar at the river. That's a far cry from 1200yds and blending into a background! Yep, I'd like to read that.

last year i made the furthest shot ever on a deer. I shot a 3 1/2 yr old buck on a dead run at 305yds while i was freestanding. i started shooting at him when he was at about 180yds and hit him with my fourth and final shot out of my Rem. 7600 pump 30-06. he was running away from me up a hill and when i shot him the slug went thru his back and blew up the heart. when he dropped i couldn't believe it. even after me and my buddy stepped it off.

7600 pump

Postby carnivore » Thu Nov 04, 2004 7:28 pm

I used to have one of those pumps and practically gave it away not that it wasn't a good gun. but it was so light that it kicked like a mule and I had a couple different scopes put on it and 4 out of the five people who tried to help me calm that little gun down all wore black eyey every time we messed with it. what I really should have done was go to a 40 or50 mm eye relief scope. I wouldn't mind having that gun back now though.

i can't say that i've really ever had a problem w/ it kicking too bad....it has a built in recoil pad that the previous owner put on it which helps but my father has a 760 .270 pump which i grew up w/ which is the reason i bought this one but it didn't really have any more kick so i just got used to it. i have a Redfield Illuminator scope on it which i just love and is BY FAR the best scope i have ever owned it is fantastic for those dawn and dusk shots and has a wide feild view.

1 shot a doe last day of season in 1997 in a final desperate act to fill my tag she was 400+ yards and i crept up on her within 350 yards before she spoted me she was about to bolt when i touched the trigger off on my 7mm rem mag 700BLD bolt action hitting her and downing her where she was standing it was approx.340-350 yard shot and i only compisated for a slight bullet drop by aiming at her top neck line and the bullet hit on target i try not to make it a habbit to shoot long distance and please note i made sure what was beyond my target and what was within the 350 yards between us before i took the shot. :)

Hey Furbang-

I finally got around to responding yo your post. Thanks for comments. I admit there was definately a fair amount of luck on that shot. But I have to admit, I had been shooting the gun daily for about a year prior just to make sure I had it figured out. Either way, it makes a great story!

Thanks!

last year one elk at 476 yards. 7mm. That one was skill, which came from lots of practice. Dropped where it stood. Colorado.

Luck was 541 yards on the run in Utah. Thought I missed every shot but got lucky with one. Couldn't do it again for all the cash in the world.

MY DAD shot a standing white tail deer at 437 yards ( messurments taken with laser range finder.) 2 verified witnesses . With a .222 remington ADL w/3x9 leapold scope . one shot in the neck DOWN . I tell you . If he did not have th 2 guys with him i would not have even posted this . But they both swear buy it . they even got the bull it out. I will post a link to the picture of the bullet soon . Just to keep you guys from sending hate mail for shotting deer with a 222 he was not the primary hunter the deer had been wonded and was a about to be lost in the brush of south Texas.

Longest shot 310yards laser ranged at a 150 class Whitetail in Wy 1999
with a 300 win mag, 180gr B.tip . This was a guided spot and stalk hunt, and was the biggest deer I had ever seen. Shot it prone off a haris bi-pod, I could see the deer lip curing behind some doe's in the scope and the guide saying" take your time, but don't miss this is a good one", talk about pressure ! Heard the bullet hit, deer dropped in it's track. Still gives me goose bumps, what a rush. ...... However the shot I am most pround of is a red wing black bird swinging in tree at 237 yards with a 220 swift,in front of two people. I was counting 1 mississippi 2 mississippi, over and over again as it was swaying, trying to get the timming down, Ka-pow black feathers, this was done in front of two people, one of which was the owner of the gun, he is still urinated about to this day. He shoots crows way out there 300-400 yards and all I say is ...was it swaying in a 20mph wind and crows are kind of big aren't they ?....I always get a F_U.....This was before laser range finder days, he was so torked about the shot that he showed up the next day with a 100yard survey tape and we had to measured it off just to know for sure......... Oh ya bye the way I spent 3 weeks on the couch after my wife at the time opened the mail on my second deposit due letter for the whitetail hunt, that I hadn't found a good time to tell her I booked ! ....... Yes, it was worth it !........ I call it the couch buck, even though it now rests on my wall.

farthest shot

Postby bambeklr » Sat Apr 16, 2005 7:57 pm

My farthest shot on a whitetail deer was this year in maryland. I was hunting with my friend and he called me on the radio and said he just watched a good buck bed in and island on the marsh with three does. He said lets go get them and we did. He came out running before we got there. My buddy doesnt shoot any thing small so I was waiting for the go ahead. He then stopped at around 150 yds. I was saying is it him,is it him. By the time he said yes he was on a dead run. I missed that sucker clean 4 times. He went into and Island and popped out on the other side. I didnt even think about the range. Bang went my browning a-bolt 7mm mag with the boss system. He kicked over his head and fell over. I couldnt beleive it. We then ranged the island at 350yds. Its a good thing I had the scope on 20 power. I love my 6.5x20x50 leupold. That whole packege rocks.

I also shot a 8 point at 235 with a h&r slug gun and barnes expander 3/4 oz slugs in delaware 2 years ago. That deer went 214 lbs dressed. And to think I didnt think I could hit the doe that was standing there earlier. I have never shot my shotgun that far. It is sighted in 2.5 inches high at 100yds. 1 inch low at 150yds and 6.5 inches low at 200. I aimed at the deers back and leter rip. GOTTA LOVE THEM H&R HEAVY BARRELS.BEEN THE DEMISE OF MANY A WHITETAIL IN MY HANDS!!!!!!

Well see down here in delaware we have to shoot shotguns. Most guys wont shoot 200yds wether its them or there equipment. So most guys kill there deer under 100yds. I am lucky enough to hunt a few different states that allow rifle.

the longest shot i have ever made on a deer was 40yrds. i shot it with my old 30-30. i am the oposite of you fellas i like so see how close i can get to my prey, except for ground squirells i shot one at 120yrds i have no witnesses except the squirell, but he cant tell the story for a number of reasons.

I see all you hunters talking about these great shots with rifles, well I shot 10 point buck that scored 165 at 185 yards, freed standing with my hunting buddy right next to me and a Game Warden less than 80 yards from me watching from the road. Dropped him on the spot with a neck shot.

Last year i shot a 5point white tail at 178 yards with my 250.sav. No scope open Iron sights. Thats the farthest shot iv ever took. I droped the gun on the trail and screwed up the scope so Open sights it is, He was at a slow run when i fired and he fell on his face. Then i had to shoot him agin, the first shot was very high, Broke his spine. Then the closest shot i ever took was with a 357 at 8yards, IT was a doe and i shot her behind the ear.
IF its brown its down. Thats only of course i have my trusty 30-30...

My best was in Northern Minnesota where its nothing but flat land as far as the eye can see. We were doing a drive and I walked the edge of the woods and we were kicking out deer left and right. What they would do is go out into the fields several hundred yards and wait for us to finish then they would head back into the woods behind us.
So 3 of them ran out and stopped so the land owner was walking next to me and saw the deer run out. He asked me if I thought I could hit them and my response was ill give it my best. It took 2 shots to figure out were I was at then I laid all 3 of them down right next to each other. Several people watched me pull off the shots of a life time. After we measured it off they ended up being 465 yards out. Now I shoot a 300 win mag with a 6.5x20 scope that is zeroed at 300 yards. So I think it was more luck for me the fact that they didn’t move. It was kind of funny because they just sat there and turned in circles because they had no idea were the shots were coming from.

I hate taking long shots. I like the deer to come in close to me, and I like them to drop in their tracks when I shoot them.

I agree Progers there is nothing better than taking a long shot. I still get goose bumps from 300+ yard shot. I have been hunting for 23 years and I have shot a lot of deer both close and far. But the thrill you get when that deer is so far out there that you can’t tell whether or not if it has horns with out looking through a scope. Or when the deer folds before it hears the shot I have to say it doesn’t get any better than that.

Shot a nubbie thinking it was a doe at 90 yards with a 243. I hit a doe running dogs from 160 with an 8mm mauser, lost the bloodtrail, then jumped ti up and never saw it again.

It was about 3:15 or so yesterday afternoon when out stepped ole mossy horn. I could see horns like oak branches towering above his ears. I did not have a range finder so I don't have an exact measurement all I could see was horns glissening in the sun he stood broadside while I decided if I could make the shot. I steadied my rifle just then he ran another 100 yrds and was about the size of a ground squirrel. He wasn't any bigger than my crosshairs. So I raised my scope and as soon as the crosshair touched the fur I pulled the trigger BOOM The kids slammed the door and I woke up can't tell you how far or how big....Dang kids

My pesonal best shots,,,365 yd Ruger M77 270 3x9 Leupold,,perfect broadside, no wind,140 gr ballistic tips, standing just 25 feet off of my firing range! Prone position

my best moving shots,,,175 yd quartering away, dead run, up moderate hill 2 shots 1/2 inch apart in the heart,140 gr ballistic tips, same rifle,,son was a witness to both. Standing by the barn processing others i had taken.

Several times i have taken multiple deer up to 5 in the matter of seconds ranging from 25-150 yrds or so,,,continuous fire. same Ruger,,,did that just this last fall (taking 5,,,normally take 3-4 when the opportunities arise)

I normally dont take the yearling does. I just have A LOT of deer in my area.

I love trying long distance. I shot a coyote at 357 yards with a 22-250. Remington. I shot a chipmunk with a 223. Remington at 134 yards. I took a crow at 413 yards with a 7mm rem mag. All ranged with a Bushnell 1000 range finder.
